JOB TITLE:
Building Counselor
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the designated administrator, counsels with students and parents individually or in groups on educational, career, and social/emotional issues in order to affect positive behavior changes and academic performance.
Reports to: Designated Administrator
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists students in defining long-range and short-range educational goals and assists in making appropriate decisions in program planning.
- Insures that students receive information on graduation requirements, academic distinction, college entrance requirements, vocational and occupational skills, requirements, and needs.
- Provides information and encouragement to students and parents relating to career choice, requirements for advanced education, and potential career opportunities.
- Provides information on resources for financial aid and various special programs.
- Orients new students and parents to the school program and the various guidance services available.
- Consults with school personnel concerning special abilities or challenges that a student may have.
- Counsels students with personal-social problems; refers students to other professionals when appropriate.
- Interprets school rules and regulations to students and parents.
- Assists teachers in addressing classroom behavior concerns.
- Interprets group test data to students, parents, and teachers, including achievement tests, aptitude tests and interest surveys.
- Refers students for individual testing, counsels with parents concerning student data and school progress.
- Attends in-service workshops and counseling meetings for the purpose of maintaining professional competence.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Working Knowledge of:
- Principles, trends, methods, strategies, practices and procedures pertaining to student achievement.
- State and Federal educational program requirements.
- Legal mandates, applicable sections of the Education Code, District policies and regulations, laws, practices and procedures, and financial and statistical record-keeping techniques.
- Effective personnel management principles.
- Modern data management, storage and retrieval systems.
- Effective communication and leadership strategies, methods and techniques.
- Effective classroom structure and instructional practices.
- Coordination and facilitation of effective professional development activities.
- Effective human relations, conflict resolution, and team building principles/procedures.
Ability to:
- Plan, organize, direct and manage a site level student and educational services system.
- Assure compliance with applicable district policies, regulations, rules and procedures and State and Federal laws, codes and regulations.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing including preparation and delivery of oral presentations.
- Maintain confidentiality of records and privileged communications.
- Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Effectively serve as a resource to the designated administrator on areas related to student achievement.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with a wide variety of groups and individuals.
- Analyze situations accurately and implement an effective course of action.
- Work independently with little direction.
- Meet schedules and timelines.
- Operate a computer terminal to enter data, maintain records and generate reports.
- Plan, coordinate and provide staff training.
- Provide leadership and stability for continuity of services.
- Drive a vehicle to carry out duties and responsibilities of the position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position must perform in carrying out essential job functions.
- Persons performing services in this position classification will frequently exert 25 – 50 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
- This type of work involves sitting, standing, walking, bending and stooping from brief periods of time to lengthy periods of time.
- Persons performing services in this position classification will incur frequent interruptions and work in a high-pressure environment.
- Essential job functions include: Perceiving the nature of sound; near and far visual acuity; depth perception; providing oral and written communication; ability to speak and project voice in either an enclosed or open area; manual dexterity to handle and work with various materials, objects and equipment; driving a motor vehicle; and the ability to perform a variety of physical activities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- No less than three (3) years of broad experience in education with evidence of increasing responsibilities including successful teaching experience.
- Master of Arts Degree or higher from an accredited college or university desirable.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Valid California Driver’s License
- Valid California Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential
