LA HONDA-PESCADERO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT POSITION DESCRIPTION AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM DIRECTOR SALARY: $28,800 plus benefits WORK YEAR: 184 days (6 hours per day) DEFINITION The after school Program Director is responsible for planning, organizing, and managing the after school program. The Program Director is responsible for implementing the program; ensuring adherence to State and District policies; keeping accurate records for program management and evaluation; maintaining relationships with students, parents, staff and volunteers; and facilitating partnerships with appropriate public and private agencies. SUPERVISOR The site principal supervises the After School Program Director. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS The ideal candidate will have strong communication and organizational skills, be a self-starter and share the vision of providing a nurturing, safe and enriching experience for culturally diverse children and families. The Program Director will be creative and flexible, excel at collaboration and team building, and be willing to work during after school hours, including some evenings and weekends. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Essential Duties: • Creates and maintains a calendar/schedule of after school program activities. • Assists in hiring, scheduling and supervising program teachers, tutors and enrichment instructors. • Recruits eligible students and collects all required confidential agreements and release forms for participation. • Orders and supervises distribution to students of healthy snacks. • Assists in coordinating student transportation services. • Schedules and coordinates special events. • Follows district procedures and policies to ensure the safety and security of students, staff, and school property during the after school program. • Orders materials and supplies for the program, tracks inventories and supervises storage and care of materials. • Assists in managing the program budget. • Deals with discipline issues when the principal is no longer at the school and follows up with the principal. • Plans and conducts staff meetings and training. • Assists in collecting data and conducting surveys for program assessment and monitoring. • Establishes and maintains communication with regular day and after school staff, the principal, community agencies/partners and families regarding all aspects of the program. • Provides required program reports and makes presentations to the school and District as appropriate. Other Duties: • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS REQUIRED This is a high stress level position in a classroom and school environment. It requires physical, mental and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position; manual dexterity sufficient to write, use telephone and business machines (including computer and calculator); vision sufficient to read printed materials; hearing sufficient to conduct in-person and telephone conversations; speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard at normal conversational distance; physical agility to push, pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, and reach overhead; physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment (classroom, office, school site to school site), drive an automobile, and respond to emergency situations; physical strength to lift 25 pounds; physical stamina sufficient to sit for prolonged periods of time; mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and make valid judgments and decisions. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED Knowledge of: • Academic subject areas to be able to assist in the instruction of language arts and mathematics • Proficiency in English, both oral and written • District rules, regulations and procedures; familiarity with appropriate sections of State Education Code • General concepts of child growth, development and behavior Ability to: • Perform a variety of complex tasks and work independently • Organize and supervise staff • Prepare and maintain accurate and timely records and reports • Follow written and oral directions • Meet schedules and timelines • Use discretion and judgment in confidential matters • Interpret District rules, regulations and procedures • Maintain appropriate health and safety requirements • Maintain an understanding, patient, warm and receptive attitude toward children • Assist in managing student behavior and maintaining classroom discipline through positive reinforcement strategies • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work • Use technology appropriate to the work environment, including typewriter, copier, calculator, word processor and printer; use office computer software applications, including word processing and spreadsheet Education and Experience • Education: BA or BS degree in Education, Social Work, Recreation Administration or related field preferred (May substitute relative experience on a year-to-year basis for the degree requirement) • Prior experience in organizing and implementing academic and enrichment activities for school age children, working with children and families, working with diverse populations, working with schools, community agencies or businesses • Valid California driver’s license • First aid and CPR training Desirable Qualifications • Experience in an instructional setting • Experience in working with diverse groups • Proficiency in Spanish, both oral and written
