SUMMARY DEFINITION
Under the general direction of the Director of Maintenance, Operations and Transportation, the Transportation Supervisor manages, supervises and coordinates the District transportation program to provide safe and efficient transportation services to students, including coordinating the bus schedules for daily routes, field trips, sporting events and other District functions, providing direction and supervision to all transportation employees, ensuring fiscal accountability and cost effectiveness and compliance with all legal and District requirements, and performing related work as required.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES include, but are not limited to the following:
- Supervises the planning and scheduling of student transportation routes and the assigning and re-assigning of drivers and equipment.
- Manages and oversees all transportation services for the purpose of ensuring safe, reliable and efficient transportation.
- Manages and oversees drivers for the purpose of providing safe and efficient transportation of students.
- Manages and oversees route management and scheduling for the purpose of ensuring optimal route utilization and management of resources.
- Checks bus routes to insure integrity of schedules, reviewing them regularly to accommodate changes in passenger load, pick-up points and other factors.
- Receives data on student counts, school schedules, traffic patterns and new construction.
- Maintains updated lists of students serviced.
- Assists school personnel in scheduling student transportation routes and special transportation needs.
- Coordinates use of contractors for transportation of students.
- Checks driver time, mileage and equipment use records for accuracy.
- Receives transportation requests for field trips and excursions.
- Schedules and assigns drivers and equipment and calls in relief drivers as needed.
- Computes costs (mileage and hours) for sporting events, charters, field trips and other special trips.
- Answers parent and student questions regarding District transportation program.
- Receives and responds to routine correspondence and telephone inquiries.
- Interacts with other districts and transportation agencies as needed on transportation and related matters.
- Maintains a variety of computerized records and files related to the transportation program.
- Works closely with the Bus Driver Trainer in ensuring that driver's training and regular work schedules are coordinated.
- Verifies accident reports with CHP.
- Makes recommendations on driver discipline.
- Counsels drivers on performance matters and makes recommendations for retraining programs.
- Evaluates drivers' performance.
- Researches new transportation laws and other educational guidance relevant to the position and recommends implementation proceedings as necessary.
- Implements Board policies and regulations, department policies and applicable collective bargaining agreement requirements and oversees compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations.
- Compiles data for reports; types monthly reports related to vehicle maintenance, personnel and field trips and attends meetings and conferences, including Governing Board meetings, as necessary or required for the purpose of providing and/or gathering information.
- Coordinates with Fleet Supervisor the scheduling of bus repairs/maintenance.
- Supervises the maintenance of appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
- Operates District vehicles.
- Assists other personnel as may be required to support them in the completion of their work activities.
- Performs related work as required.
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS include knowledge of, or training in, the following:
- Provisions of the California Vehicle Code, Title 13 of California Administration Code applicable to the operation of school buses in the transportation of students, and other applicable legal requirements and guidelines for safe and effective transportation systems.
- School District and surrounding area transportation routes and other pertinent information.
- Scheduling, dispatching, operating and routing procedures of school buses.
- Methods, materials and equipment used to provide for an effective transportation program.
- Office equipment and procedures.
- Personal computer and job-related software programs.
- Basic math.
- Complex record keeping.
- Interpersonal relations skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
- General principles of supervision, training and evaluation of employees.
- Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
ABILITY TO:
- Pass a physical examination as prescribed by law, policy or regulations.
- Operate and communicate via two-way radio.
- Adapt to emergency situations and implement effective solutions.

- Operate department vehicles and all types of school buses observing legal and defensive driving practices.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Individuals possessing the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above are considered to possess the necessary education. Experience as a school bus driver and clerical office experience. Course work or training in transportation systems and dispatching preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS
ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor environment and occasional bus driving duties. Approximately 70% sitting, 15% walking, 15% standing.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Climbing into buses; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer and other manual tasks as needed; hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on a two-way radio; seeing to review schedules; frequent bending at the waist; lifting, carrying, pulling and pushing objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
HAZARDS:
Exposure to driving a school bus during adverse weather and traffic conditions, and abusive or uncooperative individuals.
LICENSE REQUIRED
Possession of a valid and appropriate California Class BPS driver's license.
Possession of a valid California School Bus Driver's certificate.
Possession of a Red Cross Standard CPR and California Highway Patrol First Aid certificate.
Possession of a recent (30 days) Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) driving record Driver/Trainer Instructor's certificate is desirable
