Summary Description

 

This is a temporary contract position through 6/30/2015.

 

The counselor shall perform all regularly assigned duties that include academic, career, and personal counseling. This assignment also includes components of the Student Success & Support Program and transfer process. Specific responsibilities include evaluating student transcripts, and assisting students with career decisions, educational planning with includes creating online student educational plans, transfer guidance and course selection. Evening and some weekend work will be required as part of this position. Counselors work in an environment that requires the highest level of integrity, ethical practices, innovation, collegiality, teamwork, and adaptability to San Bernardino Valley College’s campus culture in support of student success.

Examples of Duties Other responsibilities to this position may include, but are not limited to, teaching student development courses, performing liaison activities to service area high schools and the community; serving as a liaison to instructional divisions, assisting with the development of counseling related publications; presenting workshops and conducting follow-up for special student populations including probation and dismissal students, appropriately assisting in the development and implementation of special programs focusing on access and retention; participating in curriculum development for student development courses; and conducting student orientations.

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

1. Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent. (NOTE: A license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline, pursuant to title 5, section 53410.1.)

2. Experience that indicates a sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and learning disabilities

 

Desired Qualifications:

 

College teaching experience in career and student development courses; One year of full-time, or two years of part-time paid community college counseling experience with emphasis in educational counseling; Experience in creating career and student development courses and course syllabi to include the development and assessment of Student Learning Outcomes; Demonstrate proficiency in the use of career counseling computer programs such as Eureka, Discover, SIGI, Career Cafe, etc.; High degree of computer literacy and the ability to integrate computer technology in teaching, one-on-one and group counseling, orientations, online counseling, and development of online student educational plans; Ability to administer and interpret aptitude, personality and career interest assessment instruments; Experience with or knowledge of articulation agreements and curriculum development; Expertise in the transfer process particularly in the use of UC Pathways, CSU Mentor, and ASSIST; Demonstrate experience with intervention programs or strategies for student success; Bilingual Spanish/English ability; Demonstrate knowledge of group dynamics and facilitation skills; Demonstrate experience in effectively working with students who are undecided/undeclared about majors and careers.

 

Working Hours:

 

Monday-Friday: 8:00am-5:00pm. Some evening and weekend hours may be required.

Salary and Benefits:

 

Starting salary annual salary $54,600.00 to $88,636.00 based on 200 days of service, plus family medical, dental, and vision coverage and employee life insurance (employee contribution depends upon plan selected.) STRS Retirement (employee contributes 8.15%).
