THE VACANCY:
This position is Open and Promotional.   
There is one Autism Specialist position currently available in the Special Education Department.  This position is for 8 hours per day, 5 days per week, 11 months per year (September through July). Candidates selected for this position will be placed at the accelerated hiring rate of Range 61, Step 3: $7,322 per month.

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under general direction of the Special Education Department and as a member of an educational team, plan, develop, coordinate, and implement the educative programs of students with autism spectrum disorders in settings across the District: special education classrooms, regular education classrooms, home programs, non-public settings, and non-public classrooms. Ensure effective educative programs for students with autism spectrum disorders through the analysis of data and concomitant program and curriculum modification. Train and monitor teachers and instructional assistants on empirical-based practices, collaborate with Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) teams, and perform related duties.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree in Applied Behavioral Analysis, psychology, special education or a closely related field is required.  A Master’s degree in one of these fields is desirable. Training in a variety of educative methods relating to working with students with autism spectrum disorders.
 
EXPERIENCE:     
Two years professional experience in a paid or non-paid position working with pre-school and/or school-aged students with autism spectrum disorders, including experience in applying programs of applied behavior analysis. Experience may include, but not limited to, positive behavioral intervention in school or home-based programs; individual program development for students with autism spectrum disorders; curriculum development for student with autism spectrum disorders; serving as a 1:1 instructional assistant; teacher, parent, tutor training in applied behavior analysis; participation in clinic or student progress meetings; conducting workshops for teachers and families.
 
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Completion or in-progress of a Board Certified Behavior Analysis certificate is preferred.
Valid California Drivers’ License.

Applications will be reviewed for minimum qualifications.  However, Newport-Mesa Unified School District reserves the right to hold a competitive screening based on the number of applications and the needs of the District.

All who are successful with the competitive screening will be invited to the interview which has been tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, March 5, 2013.  You will be notified via email, or US mail, as indicated on your application, regarding the testing and interviewing dates, times, and locations.

The first salary advance (to Step 4) is at the end of the 6 month probationary period. The next advance is on the annual anniversary of completion of probation.

An eligibility list will be established for up to 6 months.  Individuals in the top three ranks on the eligibility list will be notified for interviews as positions become available.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Establish empirical-based programs, using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) methods as a foundation, for students with autism spectrum disorders. E
Mentor and assist teachers and instructional assistants with the implementation of learning strategies and positive behavioral supports for difficult behavior. E
Mentor and assist teachers and instructional assistants with monitoring of data and information from classrooms, home environments, and non-public agencies. E
Collaborate with autism specialists and Autism Partnership to participate in on-going applied behavior analysis (ABA) trainings to teachers and instructional assistants. E
Provide parent education regarding the current research/trends in autism spectrum disorders. E
Collaborate with coordinators on the assignment of ABA trained instructional assistants, development of transitions Plans (e.g. observation, written reports, written plans) for out-of-district students with non-public agency services, and administration of IEP meetings.
Maintains records and reports as required by the District policies and State and Federal regulations. E
Provides training for staff in area of specialty, and participates in local and state presentations as necessary. E
Understand and adhere to related District, local, state and federal policies and procedures. E
Attends related meetings and conferences. E
Performs related duties as assigned.

Theories of Applied Behavior Analysis, including current learning strategies, current behavior management strategies, and data collections and data analysis methods.
Educational expectations based on the California Content Standards and No Child Left Behind

WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT:
Office, student homes, classrooms and various community sites working with students with behavioral problems who may have physical or emotional difficulties.
Driving a vehicle to conduct work as required by position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make oral presentations.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to assist/restrain students and to operate specialized equipment or office equipment.
Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students when coaching staff.
Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities.
May be subject to physical and emotional outbursts by students, including such behaviors as kicking, spitting, scratching and biting.
Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
Lifting or moving children from wheelchair to tables or desks.
