Our company serves students in hundreds of schools across multiple districts throughout Northern and Southern California. We use technology to ignite students' passion for learning while providing academic support services and enrichment activities. The California State Board of Education re-approved Extreme Learning as a Supplemental Services Provider under the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act through 2013. Our corporate office is located in the Bay Area in Morgan Hill.
Our online program, @Avanza (http://www.aavanza.com), is working to close the achievement gap while bridging the digital divide by partnering with schools throughout California. We tutor 2-12 grade students, using a combination of technology and personalized instruction from caring, knowledgeable adult tutors. We've already worked with thousands of students in more than 60 school districts, and the list is growing!
The Position
The Online Academic Coach (tutor) is responsible for creating and maintaining a positive and engaging learning environment during our two-hour online tutoring sessions with elementary, middle, or high school students. The Online Academic Coach provides hands-on, 3:1 online based academic tutoring using tools and curriculum specifically designed to facilitate online instruction. The Online Academic Coach records each student's attendance, behavior, and academic progress as well as regular updates to management staff and parents as needed.
Our online instructional program runs and operates centrally from our Morgan Hill, CA office, servicing students located throughout California. You must be available to work the following shifts below. If your availability does not match, please do not apply*.
*Must Have Availability for one of the options below (1-4) and be available for ALL designated hours within that option:
1. M-F (3:00pm-9:30pm) + Sat PM (1:00pm-5:30)
2. M-TH (3:00pm-9:30pm) + Sat AM (8:30am-1pm) Sun AM (8:30am-1pm)
3. Fri PM (3:00pm-9:30pm) + Sat AM/PM + Sun AM/PM (8:30am-5:30pm)
4. M-TH Only (3:00pm-9:30pm)
We are currently recruiting and increasing coach staffing to support our 2012-2013 operations. We are seeking candidates who are interested in tutoring fine young minds, and who are ready to start working with us later this summer.
Examples of Duties
During program:
• Actively coach students through completing daily focused enrichment lessons with the use of online classroom tools
• Actively monitor students progress through assigned computer-based curriculum
• Work to establish a mentor relationship by being interested and speaking of their classes, homework and school experience
• Apply principles of direct instruction to assist students in preparing for standardized tests
• Electronically record attendance and lessons covered
• Enforce program rules and structure and address behavior issues as they arise
• Create a safe, technology friendly, interesting online environment for student
Before and/or after program:
• Prepare your computer for use, checking functionality, signal strength and software
• Review lessons covered previously by student, and review focused enrichment lesson to be covered that day
• Ensure online tutoring station is left clean for the next tutor
• Log on 5 minutes early to ensure the student sees someone when they arrive online
• Must attend mandatory meetings/trainings as scheduled
• Complete session reports available for review by other coaches, and complete daily progress reports for parents and school administrators
• Communicate with leads/management daily after program
• Make reminder calls before each session
Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
• Computer navigation and troubleshooting
• English/Language Arts and Math concepts ranging from 1st to 12th grade content
Abilities:
• Utilize technology and a variety of software programs (Windows XP, Outlook, Excel, learning currica)
• Oral and written communication skills
• Work independently with minimal direction
• Exercise confidentiality and professionalism with students and parents at all times
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others
• Explain and teach English/LA and Math concepts ranging from 1st to 12th grade content
• Bilingual English / Spanish strongly desired
• Tutoring experience preferred, but not required
Requirements:
• Minimum of 48 college units is required
• Ability to pass a background/fingerprint check and TB test is required
• Must be available afternoons and evenings/weekends
• Ability to pass a CAHSEE equivalent ELA and MATH sample test
Compensation & Benefits:
Online Academic Coaches are paid $11.50-15.63 an hour, depending on education. Benefits include paid training and a consistent schedule.
