AFTER SCHOOL EDUCATION AND SAFETY (ASES)
CLASS TITLE: PROGRAM LEADER
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Site Coordinator, the Program Leader supervises a group of 15- 20 students, assisting with the homework help component and providing enrichment activities. As a team member, the Program Leader plans and delivers after-school curricula, considers age level developmental needs and interests, is a positive role model for students, supports students to experience a variety of learning opportunities, and creates a positive environment for learning and enrichment with a goal of 100% participation.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Conducts a group homework session in the after-school program.
Responsible for supervision transitions between activities and for leading a daily activity group in the after-school program.
Responsible for inventory and orderliness of after-school program equipment/supplies storage areas.
Works with the site coordinator and other after-school staff or consultants to plan and implement the program to best meet the needs of students at specific age levels.
May accompany children on bus to other sites or on field trips.
Prepares the room or space for class each day; has all supplies ready for class.
Keeps attendance records as required.
Involves students in picking up materials and straightening the room or area at end of class.
Checks to be sure the environment is safe, clean, and ready for activities.
Be familiar with and uphold school and after-school program behavior policies and safety procedures.
Attend all staff meetings, training and workshops.
Inform site coordinator of any proposed special projects or field trips in advance for approval.
Assist other program staff on special events.
Responsible for notifying and reporting any problems or concerns of parents and/or children to the After-school Program site coordinator.
Perform other after-school program related duties as assigned by ASES Program Director.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Supervision techniques to provide clear direction and effective support to adult workers and children;
Effective leadership skills and ability to respond calmly and appropriately to unexpected situations;
Techniques to assist children with homework, promote cooperative behavior and that support achievement of academic standards;
Perform duties with constant interruptions, plan and organize work, meet schedules and time lines;
Operate computers and use other standard office equipment, enter and retrieve data, use a variety of software programs including Word and Excel to compile and maintain accurate records and prepare reports;
Communicate effectively; correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary;
Prepare and make clear, succinct oral presentations to the public;
Knowledge of community service organizations and ability to make oral and written presentations to solicit funds and in-kind contributions for ASES Program ;
Work independently and constructively contribute to a collaborative team;
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy, including telephone techniques and etiquette, and to work confidentially with discretion
Establish and maintain good public relations with students, staff, parents, program partners, school personnel, and the public within a multicultural setting;
Interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelors or associate degree is preferred plus experience working with group of school aged children in organized setting. Require at minimum: graduation from high school plus documented experience working with groups of school age children in an organized setting. Must have experience working with elementary age children and able to successfully manage groups. Those with less than 2 years college completed must pass a Proficiency Exam given at school district. TB test clearance required. State law requires that applicant selected for the position must complete fingerprint process to check for or verify conviction record. Must be fluent in English. Spanish skills preferred, but not required.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License required.
Completion of fingerprint process (DOJ and FBI).
Freedom from tuberculosis clearance.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Physical Abilities:
Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard.
Seeing to read a variety of materials.
Bending at waist, kneeling or crouching to store or retrieve materials.
Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to reach and store supplies and equipment.
Ability to drive a car.
