POSITIONS AVAILABLE: MiraCosta College is accepting applications for temporary, hourly Early Childhood Education (ECE) Instructional Apprentices for the college's Child Development Center. Work hours vary from a minimum of three hours per day to a maximum of six hours per day, 2, 3, or 5 days per week on the Oceanside Campus. The persons selected for these assignments will be subject to work at any district facility and may sometimes be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
RATE OF PAY: $9/hour for Apprentice I; $11/hour for Apprentice II; $13/hr for Apprentice III
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an Early Childhood Education (ECE) Instructional Specialist or the Program Specialist, assist in supervising the children at all times ensuring their safety and well-being; assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating a daily curriculum of developmentally appropriate activities for young children in the Child Development Center; assist in providing student teacher mentoring and serving as a model teacher for child development students.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Assist in the supervision of small and large groups of children in a variety of developmentally appropriate activities, including lunch and nap, both in the classroom and outdoor environment, being aware of safety factors and appropriate adult-child ratio. (E)
Assist in the design and organization of learning environments and a daily schedule of developmentally appropriate activities for young children that include attention to development of early literacy, mathematical thinking, scientific thinking, artistic and creative expression, physical-motor development, social/emotional development, and multicultural experiences. (E)
Assist in the observation and documentation as well as the written assessment and evaluation of children's growth and development. (E)
Prepare classroom materials; assist in ordering instructional supplies and equipment, and in taking classroom inventory; repair and stock materials as needed. (E)
Assist children with hygiene procedures as necessary; observe and evaluate the health needs of children and advise supervising teacher. (E)
Assist in the planning and provision of nutritionally balanced snacks; maintain all adult and child work areas in a safe, sanitary and orderly condition.
Operate a variety of equipment as necessary such as computers, projectors, record/CD players, tape recorders, laminating machines and kitchen appliances.
Attend staff and planning meetings and workshops; plan for own career growth and ongoing professional development. (E)
Perform classroom duties and job-related tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Course Work Requirements: Any course work used to meet the minimum qualifications listed below must be completed with a grade of "C" or better ("pass" and "credit" grades meet this requirement) and must be from a regionally-accredited college or university. All unit requirements listed below are semester units.
A) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for APPRENTICE I:
1) Minimum of six (6) units Child Development/Early Childhood Education (CD/ECE) coursework, PLUS six (6) units of CD/ECE coursework in progress, to include the following:
a) CHLD 105 (Programs and Curriculum in Early Childhood Education) or equivalent;
b) CHLD 109 (Child Behavior and Guidance) or equivalent;
c) CHLD 113 (Child and Adolescent Growth and Development) or equivalent;
d) CHLD 205 (Health, Safety, and Nutrition) or equivalent.
AND
2) A minimum of 10 hours of service learning or the equivalent in an early learning (birth to 5 years of age) program, e.g., a child development center, Head Start .
B) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for APPRENTICE II:
1) Minimum of eighteen (18) units Child Development/Early Childhood Education (CD/ECE) coursework, PLUS three (3) units of CD/ECE coursework in progress, to include the following:
a) CHLD 105 (Programs and Curriculum in Early Childhood Education) or equivalent;
b) CHLD 106 (Educational Play: Materials) or equivalent;
c) CHLD 113 (Child and Adolescent Growth and Development) or equivalent;
d) CHLD 205 (Health, Safety, and Nutrition) or equivalent;
e) CHLD 210 (Child, Family, and Community) or equivalent.
AND
2) CHLD 270 (Preschool Teacher Internship) or equivalent must be taken in the second semester of employment if not already completed.
AND
3) At least fifty (50) days of experience in an instructional capacity in a child care and development program, working at least three hours per day within the last two years.
C) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for APPRENTICE III:
1) Minimum of twenty-four (24) units Child Development/Early Childhood Education (CD/ECE) coursework, to include the following:
a) CHLD 105 (Programs and Curriculum in Early Childhood Education) or equivalent;
b) CHLD 109 (Child Behavior and Guidance) or equivalent;
c) CHLD 113 (Child and Adolescent Growth and Development) or equivalent;
d) CHLD 205 (Health, Safety, and Nutrition) or equivalent.
AND
2) Twelve (12) additional units in a focus area in CD/ECE, to include the following:
a) CHLD 270 (Preschool Teacher Internship) or equivalent;
b) CHLD 106 (Educational Play: Materials) or equivalent;
AND
3) Sixteen (16) units of General Education coursework, including at least one course in each of the following areas:
a) humanities and/or fine arts;
b) social sciences;
c) math and/or science;
d) English and/or language arts.
AND
4) 175 days of experience in an instructional capacity in a child care and development program, working at least three hours per day within the last four years.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Current Pediatric CPR and First Aid Certificates.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Moderate physical labor with frequent to constant standing and walking for extended periods of time; frequent bending, kneeling and stooping; walking over rough or uneven surfaces; frequent lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects and/or children weighing 50 pounds or less; ability to work at computer, including repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or other control devices; ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district business.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT: Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving appropriate interactions and communications, including negotiations and conflict resolution, with a variety of individuals and/or groups of individuals from diverse backgrounds including parents, guardians and children, in person, by phone and in writing on a regular, on-going basis; ability to work effectively under pressure on a variety of tasks concurrently, while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities; ability to appropriately respond to emergency situations on an as-needed basis.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Primarily works in indoor Child Development Center and outdoor environment; intermittent exposure to hazardous materials such as blood borne pathogens, bacteria, viruses and other substances which may require use of protective gloves and personal protection equipment; exposure to dust, dirt, heat, cold, moisture, noise, etc subject to constant personal contact with frequent interruption by program staff, students, parents, and children; majority of assignment worked during daylight hours. Appointment includes assisting in Child Development Center classrooms. May work at any district location or authorized facility during day and/or evening hours with occasional evenings, holidays and/or weekends on an as-needed basis. Occasional local travel may be requested.

The MiraCosta Community College District includes coastal communities from Oceanside through Del Mar and is served by three sites: MiraCosta College in Oceanside, which serves about 10,500 credit students; the San Elijo Campus in Cardiff, which serves about 4,000 credit students; and the Community Learning Center, which serves about 4,000 credit and noncredit students.

THE SITES:
MiraCosta College's Oceanside Campus has been located since 1964 on a panoramic 121-acre hilltop site with views of the ocean and mountains.
MiraCosta's San Elijo Campus is located in Cardiff, 17 miles south of Oceanside, on 42 acres facing the San Elijo Lagoon and Nature Reserve. The San Elijo Campus opened in September 1988.
MiraCosta's Community Learning Center, a 7.6-acre urban facility located in downtown Oceanside, hosts the college's noncredit classes including English as a Second Language; the Adult High School Diploma Program; and other tuition-free, noncredit classes as well as some college credit classes.
THE PROGRAMS:
MiraCosta offers lower-division courses for those who wish to transfer to four-year universities as well as job training through certificate programs. Students may elect to work toward associate in arts degrees in academic and vocational fields.
MiraCosta's fee-based community services program provides a wide variety of classes, workshops and excursions. Tuition-free, noncredit classes also present a variety of learning opportunities at the Community Learning Center and throughout the community.
MiraCosta has partnered with the California Small Business Development Center Program, which provides service to all of North San Diego County.
