The Ventura County Office of Education is accepting applications to establish a pool of Substitute Teachers and Substitute Paraeducators.  Applications are accepted on a continuous basis for our Special Education, Court and Community Schools.

Special Education programs serve students with moderate to severe disabilities, ages 3 through 22 years and for students with emotional disturbances, operated in Camarillo, Hueneme, Oxnard, Ventura, Thousand Oaks and Moorpark.

Gateway Community School serves teenage students from grades 6-12 from throughout Ventura County and the educational program is offered in Camarillo.

Providence School in Oxnard is a Juvenile Court School which provides educational services to the minors from 12 through 18 years of age who are incarcerated in the juvenile facility.

Incomplete application packages will not be considered.  All submitted materials become the property of VCOE and will be considered for this position only.  VCOE will not return application materials.  Applicant is responsible for making copies of all materials and bears the sole responsibility for ensuring that the application package is complete when submitted.  Loose material submitted independently of the application package will not be accepted. Applications will be held in strict confidence.

SELECTION PROCEDURES

Each application will be reviewed for completeness and applicability including reference checks.  Those who are considered to be most qualified will be scheduled to attend the training.

FINGERPRINTING:  State law requires that all employees be fingerprinted to check for or verify conviction records.  All candidates with a record of convictions for offenses, other than minor traffic violations, must file a conviction record statement with the Director of Human Resources.  A record of conviction will not automatically disqualify you from employment, but failure to list all convictions may result in disqualification or dismissal.

Any attempt to directly contact the Superintendent with the intent of influencing the selection process will be considered a breach of professional ethics and disqualify the applicant from further consideration.

GENERAL

Substitutes are needed throughout the year, there is no guarantee that an applicant will work on a regular basis.  All substitutes in the pool should be given the opportunity to work from time to time, so depending on the number in the pool, you may/may not be called often.  Also, if you are only available for certain days or areas, this may limit your assignments.

 APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Submit a complete substitute employment application packet to Human Resources. Please be sure to include copies of your college transcripts, credentials or copy of your degree if applicable.

As part of the application process, your application will be reviewed.  An initial training will be scheduled as part of the interview process.  The training is also to provide you with information regarding job requirements, our programs, and the students we serve.  The trainings are generally scheduled on a bimonthly basis.  Subbing in our Court Schools requires an additional training.

Holders of Substitute Permits, Preliminary, or Clear Teaching Credentials (Multiple Subjects, Single Subjects, Special Education) can qualify to substitute teach for VCOE.  Permit holders may substitute for VCOE throughout the school year.  However, in a given school year they may only substitute for 30 days in any one general education teacher’s class and for 20 days in any one special education teacher’s class.

The pay rate for substitute teachers for the 2011-2012 school year is:

$120.00 /day for regular subbing

$140.00/day for long-term subbing (after the 10th day of the long-term assignment)
