SCHOOL COMMUNITY ASSISTANT

SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Assists teachers, school nurses, administrative staff and other school personnel in providing liaison
with parents and assistant to students; assists with parent meetings and advisory councils; may
provide transportation as needed.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class assist school personnel in working with parents, students and community
agencies. In most assignments incumbents must have use of a private automobile for home visits,
meetings, and transporting students and parents. Incumbents assigned to categorically funded
programs are limited to providing services to project participants. This class is distinguished from
that of Community Liaison Specialist in that incumbents provide service primarily at the school level
as opposed to having broad program responsibilities on a district-wide basis.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Duties of position in this class include, but are not limited to:
• Serves as resource person between the school and community.
• Develops factual information concerning school attendance and behavioral problems.
• Telephones and/or makes home visits assisting attendance problems, welfare needs, health
needs, clothing and student behavior and academic performance.
• Maintains close liaison with teachers, administration, nurses and other staff members.
• Arranges conferences between parents and school personnel.
• Acquaints families with and refers them to community agencies and resources.
• Encourages parents to attend school meetings and activities.
• Transports students and parents as needed.
• Assists with parent meetings and advisory councils.
• Prepares materials for home and school use.
• Assists in recruiting and organizing volunteers.
• Operates equipment such as copy machines, etc.
• May work directly with students regarding behavior, health, and academic problems.
• Attends meetings as assigned.
• May assist the school nurse in various health screening activities.
• Performs other related duties as required.
SKAs
Skills in: Safely operating a motor vehicle; operating a variety of office equipment.
Knowledge of: Community organizations, programs, services and resources in the area of health,
social work, education and recreation; English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation;
basic math; office equipment and procedures.
Abilities to: Organize and conduct meetings; communicate effectively orally; recruit and organize
volunteers; operate office equipment and perform routine clerical tasks; work effectively with
children and adults; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; use good

judgment; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; maintain
sensitivity to ethnic, religious, cultural and sexual differences.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to possess the necessary skills,
knowledge and abilities established for the position; must possess a secondary (i.e.,
high school) school diploma, or its equivalent (GED). Advanced education, such as
an Associate (AA) degree, or education beyond an AA degree is highly desirable.
Experience: Equivalent to one (1) year of full-time experience working with community agencies
and school age children.
SPECIAL LICENSE OR LANGUAGE SKILLS
A valid class C California driver's license is required; occasional use of a private vehicle is required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Employees must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of the position with
or without reasonable accommodation and without hazard to themselves or others.
APPOINTMENT
Employees who receive a regular appointment to the class must serve a probationary period of one
hundred and thirty (130) days of paid service. During this period, an employee must demonstrate an
overall satisfactory level of performance; failure to do so shall result in the employee's termination
without right of appeal to the Personnel Commission.
