LEAD COMPUTER/TELECOMMUNICATIONS REPAIR TECHNICIAN

SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, repairs and maintains various types of mini/micro computers and peripheral hardware. Assembles, installs, provides periodic maintenance, modifies and tests electronic telecommunications and telephony equipment at district sites. Provides technical leadership, guidance and functional supervision to other assigned computer operations personnel.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
A Lead Computer/Telecommunications Repair Technician is primarily assigned tasks specifically involving the maintenance, repair, modification and testing of computer or word processing related hardware.
Positions in this class require journey-level expertise in computers, peripheral equipment, telecommunications-related equipment and elements of their repair; incumbents perform installation, repair, service, maintenance and preventive maintenance of computers, and audiovisual or other electronic equipment. A lead Computer/Telecommunications Repair Technician is assigned and performs lead responsibilities in the areas of technical/functional leadership, instruction and assistance, and may exercise limited supervisory duties over assigned staff, whereas computer Repair Technicians or Electronics Technicians do not.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Duties of a position in this class include, but are not limited to: Installs, repairs, makes adjustments, configures, provides preventative maintenance and servicing for computer equipment and peripherals (E); assists in the use of various computer systems, peripherals and software applications (E); installs upgrades to existing computer systems (E); provides operational and software support to users, including hands-on training as needed (E); assembles, installs, provides periodic maintenance, modifies and tests electronic telecommunications and telephony equipment (E). Maintains troubleshooting and problem-solving skills appropriate to existing and new hardware (E); obtains documentation and test equipment necessary for repairs; establishes service reports for installation, maintenance and repair of equipment; establishes and maintains procedures for identifying reasons for non-functioning computers and related hardware. May operate a District vehicle to perform functions, pick up or delivery of equipment and/or components; may evaluate new equipment for potential District use; performs other related duties as required.

Skills in: Using, operating and maintaining the tools and equipment in the maintenance and repair of mini/micro computers and related computer equipment; safely operating a motor vehicle.
Knowledge of: Proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of electronic/electrical equipment; basic electronics and communication concepts; telecommunications and telephony; principles of electronic data processing, digital electronic logic, computer time-sharing operations, and data transmission; principles of electrical and electronic theory, circuitry, and semi-conductors; electronic test equipment; mini-computers and related equipment, including word processors; shop math applicable to computer repair; safe working practices and procedures; sources of information to answer complex repair questions; principles and techniques of good interpersonal relations and supervisory practices.
Abilities to: Read, understand and follow oral and written instructions; use the tools and test equipment of the trade with speed, precision and competence; learn characteristics of new types and models of computers, terminals, modems, and other peripheral devices; read and work from plans, logic diagrams and blueprints; analyze equipment problems and determine needed repairs; read and interpret technical instructions from manuals; communicate effectively orally; plan and organize work; meet deadlines; exercise good judgment; pay attention to detail; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and others; maintain sensitivity to ethnic, religious, cultural and sexual differences.
QUALIFICATIONS
Any Combination Equivalent to:
Education: High School Diploma and completion of formal or informal education sufficient to possess the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities established for the position supplemented by courses in electronics technology. Completion of a recognized training program or a comparable manufacturer’s training program is desirable.
Experience: At least two (2) years of full-time experience working in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of computers, printers, related computer equipment or components, or related telecommunications/electronic equipment is required. Experience as a lead is desirable.
SPECIAL LICENSE OR LANGUAGE SKILLS
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License, or use of alternative means of transportation, is required.

APPOINTMENT
Employees who receive a regular appointment to the class must serve a probationary period of one hundred and thirty (130) days of paid service. During this period, an employee must demonstrate an overall satisfactory level of performance; failure to do so shall result in the employee's termination without right of appeal to the Personnel Commission.
