Requirements / Qualifications
BASIC FUNCTION: To provide accurate and culturally appropriate oral interpretation and/or written translation services to facilitate communication between school staff and families whose primary language is not English; to support equitable access to educational programs, services, and activities; and to assist the District in meeting state and federal language access requirements. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This classification is established for temporary, hourly employees who provide oral interpretation and/or written translation services on an as-needed basis to support multilingual students, families, and staff. Positions in this class are not part of the regular classified service and do not have a regular work schedule or guaranteed hours. Assignments may vary in location, duration, and complexity, and may include daytime, evening. Hourly Interpreter/Translators are expected to demonstrate a high level of linguistic proficiency in English and at least one additional language, maintain strict confidentiality, and provide culturally responsive communication support. Work is performed under general supervision of District Interpreters/Translators and may involve independent judgment in selecting appropriate interpreting or translation techniques.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional coursework, certification, or training in interpretation, translation, linguistics, or a related field is highly desirable. Prior experience providing interpretation and/or translation services in educational, community, or professional settings preferred. OTHER REQUIREMENTS Successful completion of District onboarding requirements. Demonstrated language proficiency through assessment or certification, as required by the District. Availability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings. Ability to travel to various school sites within the District as needed.
