Quarry Lane School, the only private, independent IB World School in the San Francisco East Bay Area serving students in grades Jr.K through 12, seeks to hire an Academic College Counselor who is passionate about guiding students and their families through QLS’ various diploma programs/academic paths. The position will work closest with 8th, 9th, and 10th grade levels while helping to provide a seamless hand-off to the students’ assigned College Counselors starting junior year. The Academic College Counselor should place a high importance on personalizing the advising process and helping students achieve their educational goals.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop curriculum for and teach college and academic planning seminars to 8th, 9th, and 10th grade students.
  • Counsel students on appropriate course selection during annual advising meetings. 
  • Meet regularly with students and parents to discuss early-stage college planning.
  • Coordinate and/or present at evening parent sessions, Coffee with the Counselor, Summer Enrichment Fair, and other college-related events.
  • Guide students in activity and summer planning.
  • Collaborate with the Department of Academics, faculty, and administrators to ensure students’ academic success.
  • Develop content for bi-weekly newsletter.
  • Assist with planning Intraterm campus tours and mock SAT/ACT exams.
  • Participate in local and national associations such as NACAC and WACAC to remain current on trends in college admissions.
  • Be an active and engaged member of the QLS community.

 

Strong candidates will ideally possess:

  • Bachelor’s Degree is required, Master’s Degree is preferred
  • At least 1-2 years of experience in selective college admissions and/or a background in college counseling in independent schools
  • Extensive and in-depth knowledge of the college admissions and financial aid processes and an understanding of the current college admissions landscape
  • Passionate about secondary and post-secondary education as well as building positive relationships with domestic and international high school students and families. 
  • Effective communication and presentation skills
  • Experience using Naviance

 

This position may require work outside the published school calendar.
