NOVATO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT WORK YEAR: 3 hours per day, 5 days per week, 10 months DEPARTMENT: Food and Nutritional Services SUMMARY DEFINITION: The job of Nutritional Services Site Assistant is done for the purpose/s of overseeing the cooking and preparing of food items that meet mandated nutritional requirements; verifying quantities and specifications of orders; maintaining facilities in a sanitary condition; monitoring equipment and supply requirements and assisting assigned food service personnel in food preparations. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below. Duties may vary from site to site. This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principle job elements.) E = Essential Functions • Directs food service workers and other personnel as assigned for the purpose of maximizing the efficiency of the work force and meeting shift requirements. E • Directs the transport and delivery of hot and cold food, snacks, etc. to satellite locations for the purpose of ensuring availability of food service items and meeting the mandated nutritional requirements. E • Estimates food preparation amounts and adjusts recipes, if required for the purpose of meeting projected meal requirements and minimizing waste. Inspects food items and/or supplies for the purpose of verifying quantity and specifications of orders and/or complying with mandated health requirements. E • Manages Central Kitchen operations for the purpose of ensuring the availability of pre-packed meals, food and material supplies and catering services to individual site locations. E • Monitors equipment operations and functions for the purpose of maintaining equipment in safe working order. E • Orders equipment and supplies (e.g. commodity purchases, standard items stocked in warehouse, special items required for catering events, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining and adequate inventory to complete jobs efficiently within budget guidelines. E • Performs functions as required of another position within area of responsibility for the purpose of providing overall coverage of food service operations. E • Prepares documentation, reports, correspondence, etc. for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information. E • Responds to inquiries of students, staff and the public for the purpose of providing information and direction regarding the type and/or cost of meals. E • Trains employees and student workers/volunteers and evaluates job performance for the purpose of achieving success in the food services department. E • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities. E • Attends meetings of employees, student groups, community representative, etc. for the purpose of obtaining and/or providing information and discussing and/or resolving problems. E Job Requirements – Minimum Qualifications SKILLS • To perform multiple non-technical tasks with an occasional need to upgrade skills due to changing job conditions. • To satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and utilizing equipment used in profession. KNOWLEDGE • To perform basic math including calculations of fractions, percents and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats and/or present information before groups; and understand complex multiple step instructions. • To satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: child nutrition; quantity cooking; health standards and hazards; and safety practices and procedures. ABILITY • To schedule activities; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and coordinate a number of factors in the use of equipment. • Flexibility is required to work with others under a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined by different processes; and use equipment for a variety of purposes under different conditions that requires an understanding of various methods of operation. • To work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of different types and/or purposes; and utilize job related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues, create plans of action and reach solutions; with data it is moderate; and with equipment it is moderate. • To satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: working as part of a team; communicating with diverse groups; setting priorities; and working with children.
