CUSTODIAN V - Secondary DEFINITION: Under direction, to supervise and participate in custodial, grounds, and routine maintenance work at a middle school or high school; and to do related work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Incumbents in positions allocated to this class are responsible for custodial, grounds, and routine building and equipment maintenance work at one of the middle and senior high schools. Incumbents supervise between five and ten subordinate employees. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: • Confers with Principal regarding care and cleaning programs at the school plant; participates in and supervises the work of subordinates in the performance of general cleaning and custodial operations in offices, classrooms, and other school facilities. • Prepares work schedules and assigns work to subordinate custodians; inspects and evaluates work, giving advice in cleaning problem areas; prepares for and directs custodial services for a variety of special activities, including meetings, dances, and athletic events; • Prepares annual performance reports on subordinate employees; orders all custodial and maintenance supplies; reviews and evaluates maintenance work requests, deciding whether work can be done by custodial staff or is to be done by the District maintenance staff. • Receives and distributes equipment, supplies, and mail throughout the school; performs routine maintenance work on school equipment and buildings, such as repairing and adjusting locks, door closers, student book lockers, desks, clocks, fire alarms, gates, fences, and football and gymnasium bleachers. • Replaces fluorescent light ballasts and electrical plugs and switches; checks and performs preventive maintenance on heating and air conditioning systems, such as lubricating electrical motors and pumps and removing, cleaning, replacing, and adjusting belts, filters, and valves. • Unplugs stopped drains and toilets; maintains records and completes forms regarding custodial activities, equipment and supplies. • Cleans or paints over writing on school buildings; makes frequent inspections of school facilities and reports damaged buildings, broken equipment, and safety, sanitary, and fire hazards. • Moves or rearranges desks, chairs, tables, furniture, and other equipment; locks and unlocks doors and gates; may take money to bank; may run errands as requested by the principal. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of experience in custodial or janitorial work. CUSTODIAN V – Secondary (Continued) Knowledge of: Modern cleaning methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment; Principles and practices of minor equipment and building repair work; Safe work practices; Principles of supervision and training. Ability to: Supervise subordinates and ensure that assigned work is completed effectively; Estimate quantities of materials and supplies needed; Make minor repairs to school equipment and buildings; Perform heavy physical labor; Make oral and written reports; Keep simple records; Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

2 Letters of Recommendation Required. Work Week: Monday-Friday 6:30 am - 3 pm (includes 30 min unpaid lunch break)

Must complete Mandated Reporter Training before first day of employment.
