CUSTODIAN IV DEFINITION: Under direction, to supervise and perform custodial, grounds, and routine maintenance work at an elementary school or at the District office and continuation school. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Incumbents in positions allocated to this class are responsible for custodial, grounds, and routine building and equipment maintenance work at an elementary school or at the District office and continuation school, including the supervision of another part or full-time position. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: • Performs routine maintenance work on school equipment and buildings, such as repairing and adjusting locks, door closers, student book lockers, bleachers; replaces fluorescent light ballasts and electrical plugs and switches. • Checks and performs preventive maintenance on heating and air conditioning systems, such as lubricating motors and pumps and removing, cleaning, replacing, and adjusting belts, filters, and valves; unplugs stopped drains and toilets. • Working from a prepared work schedule, sweeps, scrubs, strips, waxes, and polishes concrete, linoleum, tile, and wood floors and vacuums, spots, and shampoo rugs and carpets in offices, nurse’s and faculty rooms, auditoriums, dining rooms, cafeterias, hallways, ramps, and stairways. • Washes, cleans, and dusts windows, mirrors, railings, walls, furniture, tables, benches, woodwork, hall lockers, and other equipment. Erases and cleans chalkboards; vacuums chalk trays and erasers; cleans and polishes metal work such as door panels and hand rails; empties and cleans pencil sharpeners and waste containers. • Hauls waste to appropriate area; washes, scrubs, and disinfects rest rooms and shower rooms; replaces light globes. • Reports damaged buildings, broken equipment, and safety, sanitary, and fire hazards; Moves or rearranges desks, chairs, tables, and furniture, and other equipment. • Moves and sets up bleachers; sets up for and covers special events; locks and unlocks doors and gates. Operates night-lights; checks doors and windows for security; picks up papers and other refuse in buildings and on grounds. Sweeps walks, entrances, and adjacent black top. • During school vacation periods, participates in the thorough cleaning and restoration of a school plant; may perform routine groundskeeping work, such as raking leaves and watering lawns, shrubs, and trees; may take money to bank and run errands as required; assists in receiving and distributing stocks and supplies delivered to the school. • Orders or assists in ordering custodial and maintenance materials and supplies. In addition to the above duties, an incumbent at an elementary school • confers with the principal regarding care and cleaning programs at the school plant; • prepares work schedule for cleaning of the school buildings and may assign work to subordinate staff; • maintains records and completes forms regarding custodial activities, equipment and supplies. CUSTODIAN IV – Elementary (Continued) DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: One year of experience in custodial or janitorial work. Knowledge of: Basic techniques of supervision and training; Modern cleaning methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment; Principles and practices of minor equipment and building repair work; Safe work practices. Ability to: Supervise subordinate staff; Estimate quantities of materials and supplies needed; Make oral and written reports; Keep simple records; Make minor repairs to school equipment and buildings; Use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency; Perform heavy physical labor; Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
