OLD ADOBE UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASSIFIED POSITION DESCRIPTION INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT, ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER (ELL) DEFINITION: Under the general supervision of the assigned Principal and English Learner Specialist, provides English as a second language testing and instruction to individual or small groups of children or students in a classroom or an instructional resource setting; and/or prepares instructional materials; and/or performs a variety of clerical duties, as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The ELL Instructional Assistant class is distinguished from other classifications in the series in that incumbents are assigned to instructional and/or clerical situations other than bilingual, special education or the regular instructional programs. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: ELL Instructional Assistants are expected to perform any combination of the following duties: • Tests all students in English whose Home Language Survey indicates a second language; • Scores all tests; • Maintains District master list of the students tested, dates of testing, classifications and reclassifications of students; • Informs parents, in writing, of test results; • Schedules classes with classroom teachers for small group language instruction; • Provides oral English instruction and emotional support for students in a relaxed learning environment; • Prepares instructional materials as needed; • Observes and assists in controlling behavior or children/students according to school/District policies and regulation; • Tutors individuals or small groups to reinforce instruction as directed and reports progress or lack of progress of student performance and behavior to the ELL Specialist and/or classroom teacher; • Sets up study and work areas, displays and exhibits and operates audio-visual equipment; • Informs classroom teachers of instructional units being used; • Assists in the supervision of children/students on field trips; • Operates office equipment as needed; • Orders and maintains classroom instructional supplies and books as required; • Assists the assigned supervisor in caring for the health and safety of children/students; brings health and safety concerns to the attention of the assigned supervisor; • Confers with the ELL Specialist about any questions relative to the assistant’s daily assignment; CLASSIFIED POSITION DESCRIPTION INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT, ELL • Attends training on/off campus; • Performs other related work as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge of: • Basic subjects taught in district schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language, and reading; • Safety practices in classroom and playground; • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; • Reading and writing communication skills; • Interpersonal relations skills using tact, patience and courtesy; • Record keeping techniques. Ability to: • Perform clerical duties such as filing, copying and maintaining records; • Learn the procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties; • Understand and follow written and oral directions; • Communicate effectively with all children, students and adults; • Read, interpret and follow rules and regulations; • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; • Work confidentially and with discretion; • Supervise and assist with the control of child and/or student behavior in accordance with rules and regulations; • Hold a valid California Driver’s License for traveling between schools; • Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties; • Maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties; • Learn and follow the practices, rules, and regulations of the District and the school to which assigned; • Maintain the confidentiality of school related information. EXPERIENCE: • Some experience in working with children and/or students in an organized setting is desirable. EDUCATION: • Two years of college and pass the Sonoma County Department of Education Proficiency test; • Two years of experience working with students may be substituted for each year of college.
