Job Summary
Solano County Office of Education – Foster and Homeless Youth Services is hosting a service opportunity for AmeriCorps members for the California Foster Youth Initiative. The California Foster Youth Initiative utilizes AmeriCorps members as Youth Mentors to assist foster youth in achieving academic success and developing life skills necessary for a successful transition to adulthood. AmeriCorps members build a meaningful relationship with foster youth and together they work on goal-oriented tasks to catalyze the social, emotional, cognitive, and identity development of the youth. One 12-month, part-time service opportunity is available for AmeriCorps members to serve as a Youth Mentor for youth in foster care countywide, as well as for youth in foster care who are served in short-term residential therapy programs.

• Must be at least 18 years of age. • Must have a high diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. Some college experience is preferred. • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or legal permanent resident alien of the United States. • Agree and pass a national service criminal history check. • Possess a valid California driver’s license and be able to provide proof of car insurance. • Must have reliable transportation. • Experience in social services in community settings with foster youth preferred. • Experience in working with diverse populations and serve youth and families with diverse economic, social, racial, and cultural backgrounds, with the ability to be culturally responsive and appropriate. • Knowledgeable about local community resources. • Experience with word processing software such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, etc. • Ability to establish and maintain personal and programmatic boundaries while providing supportive services. • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to individuals who may not share basic commonality, including value systems and behavior norms. • Must have fundamental written and oral communication skills. • Must possess great organizational skills. • Ability to operate standard office equipment • Skill to maintain a professional, confidential work environment. • Ability to manage multiple tasks in an efficient manner. • Knowledge of child abuse issues, substance abuse and of child development and behavior. • Ability to work evenings and weekends, as required. • Able to deal with stressful situations. • Must report to service site as scheduled and agreed upon with Host Site Supervisor.
