LIBRARY TECHNICIAN BASIC FUNCTION: Under professional supervision, perform responsible clerical and technical duties in coordinating the use of various instructional materials such as audio-visual equipment, textbooks and library materials in a school library. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: 1. Assist students and staff in the use of the library. 2. Check books and other materials in and out of the library. 3. Prepare and send out overdue notices; collect fines for lost or damaged books. 4. Assist in the inventory and purchase of library materials. 5. Receive and process various instructional materials for library use. 6. Repair and reinforce books and other library materials. 7. Type and may compose library correspondence. 8. Maintain an account of the library budget. 9. Take roll and write library passes; supervise students in the library when the librarian is out. 10. May issue lockers and maintain records of combinations. 11. Train and supervise student assistants. 12. Schedule the use of audio-visual equipment. 13. Assist faculty and students in the set up and use of equipment. 14. Perform routine cleaning and maintenance on audio-visual equipment. 15. Receive and distribute films. 16. Type and distribute film lists; maintain a file on all audio-visual equipment. 17. Splice and rewind film. 18. Receive and process new textbooks. 19. Keep an inventory of textbooks in stock; may prepare purchase orders for new books. 20. Disperse textbooks for classroom use; maintain a file on all textbooks. 21. Box and label books for storing or disposing; perform minor repair on damaged books. 22. Perform related duties as assigned. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES: Standard library practices, terminology and procedures; basic reference sources and materials; the use of audio-visual equipment and various instructional materials; inventory and record keeping procedures; business English, spelling, punctuation and arithmetic. ABILITY TO: Learn technical library methods and procedures; apply specific rules, regulations, and process relating to the operation of a library; learn to operate and maintain a wide variety of audio-visual equipment; keep accurate records; train and supervise student help; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work; type at least 40 words per minute from clear copy; read and write at the level required for successful job performance. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to one year of general clerical experience, preferable involving some clerical library experience. WORKING CONDITIONS: School Learning Center environment, subject to some lifting and stooping.
