JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: COUNSELOR
DEFINITION: Under the supervision of the site administrator, the high school counselor performs those duties and responsibilities which provide guidance to students, staff, parents, and the administration in matters pertaining to pupil personnel services.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Keep abreast of the District’s educational philosophy and Board-adopted goals
and objectives.
- Plan and implement a comprehensive written counseling program which provides
college, career and academic guidance to all high school students.
- Keep abreast of the trends and practices of the guidance and counseling
profession.
- Organize and facilitate the school and university entrance testing program and
interpret data with students, parents and staff.
- Conduct informational presentations to familiarize parents and students with
availability of high school offerings, junior college programs, scholarship
information and university entrance requirements.
- Organize and conduct field trips to local colleges and universities.
- Provide appropriate information and coordinate the administration of school and
district testing programs.
- Oversee the calculation of student grade point averages and determine the
school’s Valedictorian and Salutatorian.
- Contribute regularly to the school newsletter to publicize counseling services and
other pertinent information.
- Help students obtain needed school and community resources.
- Plan and conduct orientation of new students.
- Refer students to other agencies when special services are required.
- Assist students with present educational decisions and future educational and
career plans.
- Help students acquire knowledge and skills which will assist them in their
personal and social development.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive total school climate.
- Monitor and counsel students regarding their progress toward satisfying high
school requirements.
- Coordinate the application and selection process for the Boy’s and Girl’s State
Programs.
- Oversee the academic placement and take steps to promote a positive experience
for foreign exchange students.

- Provide crisis counseling when appropriate.
- Counsel students exhibiting behavioral problems.
- Serve as a resource person in curriculum matters at the school and district level.
- Act as a resource person to the family, community and other agencies.
- Provide opportunities for positive student recognition.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- High school graduation requirements.
- Post secondary career opportunities.
- Testing data and university entrance requirements.
- Scholarships, grants, financial aid availability, and application procedures.
- School and community resources.
ABILITY TO:
- Supervise classified staff involved in student guidance program.
- Operate current, applicable computer software.
- Instruct students.
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the
courseof work.
- Communicate well verbally and in writing; understand and carry out written and
verbal instructions.
- Simultaneously handle multiple on-going projects and processes.
- Analyze situations and adopt a course of action; solve many problems
Independently without supervision.
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor of Arts degree
- Masters of Arts degree preferred
- Valid Pupil Personnel Services Credential
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish.
