PARAEDUCATOR DEFINITION Assists teachers in the implementation of the total instructional program and is responsible for specific assigned instructional tasks. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES • Assist teachers in the presentation of activities • Provide individual and small group help to students in the basic skills of reading, oral language and mathematics • May help to teach English to students whose native language is not English • May provide outside supervision for children before school, during recess, at lunchtime, and after school • May assist teachers in parent contacts and/or parent conference • Assist teachers in the implementation of special instructional programs which meet the unique learning needs of some pupils • Performs related work as required. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education: • High school diploma or equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade (GED), and • Associate of Arts Degree or 48 semester units (NCLB) DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: • General needs and behavior of children; • General clerical methods and procedures; and • Basic skills - reading, writing, oral language and mathematics. Ability to: • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions in English; • Speak and write Spanish; • Supervise a group of children or an individual child in various learning activities; • Maintain a sympathetic understanding of the problems and needs of children; • Perform a wide variety of duties which will enhance the instructional program; • Maintain cooperative relationships with people contacted during the course of work; • Maintain confidentiality regarding students and school records; and • Plan materials independently for reinforcing the learning of math and reading skills. Experience: • Previous work relating to children and/or college training. SUPERVISION Works under the supervision of Administrative Personnel. Board adopted: February 4, 2008
