ANAHEIM CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT Human Resources CLASS TITLE: SPEECH AND LANGUAGE SPECIALIST BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Principal and Director of Special Education, screen, assess and provide specialized speech and language services and assistance for children and young adults with deficiencies who qualify for services as established by State standards; participate in developing and implementing Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) for students who qualify for Designated Instruction and Services (DIS); provide speech and language therapy to individualized or group of students. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Provide specialized services and assistance with the assessment and screening of children and young adults with speech and language deficiencies; utilize age-appropriate standardized and non-standardized testing and assessment tools; provide phonological and language training in individual or small groups of students. E Conduct a full-scale speech and language assessment of students; complete concise and valid assessment reports, including diagnostic information and treatment recommendations for initial evaluation and periodic IEPs. E Provide individual and small group therapy; schedule caseload; plan lessons; participate in developing and implementing IEPs for students who qualify for DIS. E Participate in IEP meetings and consultations to provide assessment information to teachers and parents; provide assessment of current communication skills and recommendations for future instructional needs. E Participate in in-service training sessions, departmental meetings, parent conferences and consultations with professional speech and language therapists. E Operate a computer terminal and other specialized diagnostic and office equipment, such as speech and language software, video camera, tape recorder and various electronic communication devices. E Prepare, type and maintain a variety of related records and reports, such as IEP forms and assessment paperwork, daily speech and attendance register, notes and files and annual IEPs. E Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Advanced-level diagnostic and clinical procedures, tests and equipment used in treatment of speech and language disorders. Computer operation, applicable hardware and software associated with adaptive and speech and language technology. Augmentative communication devices for students with severe handicaps. Assessment theories, practices and techniques utilized for integration of students with special education needs. Create and implement activities to achieve improvements in student language and speech deficiencies. Technical aspects of the communications deficiency field. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Safe practices in classroom activities. Child guidance principles and practices related to children with special education needs. Curriculum, goals and objectives of the department. Operation of office machines including computer equipment and specified software. Record-keeping techniques. Applicable sections of the State Education Code and other applicable laws. ABILITY TO: Evaluate, plan and implement goals and objectives to meet the communication needs of individual students. Conduct full-scale language and speech testing and assessment. Provide speech and language therapy. Learn and utilize adaptive technology and program electronic communication aids. Evaluate, implement and develop procedures and programs to diagnose and assist in the diagnosis of deficient communication. Understand and relate to children with special needs. Monitor and evaluate student progress. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Prepare and deliver oral presentations. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Maintain records and prepare reports. Operate a computer terminal to enter data, maintain records and generate reports. Maintain current knowledge of program rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions. Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. Operate specialized testing and diagnostic equipment. Sit or stand for extended periods of time. Bend at the waist, kneel or crouch. Walk. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: master’s degree in communicative disorders or closely related field. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Clinical Rehabilitative Services Credential required by the State of California. Ability to meet District standards for physical and mental health.
