Job Description / Essential Elements:    Print   

 

DEFINITION:  Under general direction, oversees the day-to-day operations of the Career Center; initiate, develop, and implement the Career, College, and Employment Skills awareness program for all students; promote an awareness of career, college, and employment opportunities and the availability of resource materials; provide career and college guidance and job seeking skills information to students, staff, parents and the greater community; report to Principal and/or Counseling Department as needed regarding Career Center programs.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: 

 

Meets with individual or small groups of students to discuss career information, goals and related problems; administers and interprets interest tests; collects and organizes information explaining careers and vocational opportunities; maintains the file of career materials including an index of what is available for student use; maintains contact with other resources outside the schools to which students can be referred for career information; initiates and publishes programs to students and faculty; maintains an attractive display of the types of information which students have access; schedules use of the Career Center for classes; publicizes job opportunities for students; maintains ‘job-board” for students; may assist ROP Program Administrator; meets with Program Administrator as needed; attend workshops to keep current; maintains contact with other Career Center advisors; acts as liaison with college representatives; issues work permits; may assists students in locating jobs; provides related instruction for work experience; assists students with junior college (College of Marin) application process; capable of administering and interpreting the following tests; Interest, Aptitude; acts as liaison with military branches to coordinate administration of the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery); makes presentations to school community groups; oversee and evaluate student articles; develop and maintain a library of updated career and educational materials, career and college computer software, college catalogs and brochures; develop and implement school-wide Career Day, job shadows, internships and informational interviews with community members; administer and interpret aptitude tests for all juniors; recruit, schedule, publicize and host all college representatives; develop career infusion curriculum and provide teachers with current career resources and career speakers; coordinate and recruit students for Outdoor Education Program; oversee and evaluate student aides; make presentations to school community groups; initiate and lead field trips for college and career related activities; organize, publicize and implement College of Marin application process.

 

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS – EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  BS or BA required.  In addition, prefer prior counseling type of experience in working with a high school age clientele.

 

 

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 

Knowledge of human relations skills and techniques of “marketing information to students; knowledge of organization of materials and processes for maintaining a collection of pamphlets and brochures; ability to establish positive relationships with students, teachers, and administrators; ability to make contact with members of the community and persuade their participation in activities of the Center; ability to exercise imitative and assume responsibility; ability to type at a net speed of 45 words per minute; knowledge of office systems; possess excellent communication skills (both oral and written); computer literate to access information using current technology, college entrance requirements; occupational job training and job marker information; computer skills; balance may tasks at one time; write well; job seeking skills; career decision-making theory and testing instruments.
