CROSSING GUARD
Classified Job Description
DEFINITION
Under the direct supervision of the site principal, the Crossing Guard provides for the safety of students crossing designated street intersections or crosswalks by escorting students across such roadways in an efficient and effective manner; communicates to supervisor observations and/or incidents that may impact the general well being of students; notes and reports pedestrian right of way or other traffic law violations.
EXA OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Communicate school policies and safety procedures to students, parents, staff and visitors
- Direct traffic for the purpose of ensuring the safe crossing of students and other pedestrians
- Intervene in potential emergency situations for the purpose of minimizing injury to students
- Monitor student safety in and around crosswalks and intersections
- Maintain equipment; stop sign, vest/jacket
- Report observations and/or incidents to supervisor relating to students; accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, violation of rules
- Report pedestrian right of way or other traffic law violations to supervisor
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- School discipline rules and procedures
- General pedestrian safety laws
- Vehicle Code and the responsibilities of motorists as demonstrated by possession of a driver’s license
- Basic first aid
Ability to:
- Effectively communicate with students, parents and community members
- Follow written and oral directions of supervisor
- Work cooperatively and effectively with students, parents, and school staff
- Maintain regular attendance
- Willingness to wear identifying badge, vest and/or jacket.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE AND/OR TRAINING
- Equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade
- Experience working with children
- Training related to safety, traffic control and issues related specifically to position
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND DOCUMENTATION DESIRED-REQUIRED
- Valid California Driver's License required
- Fingerprint and Tuberculosis clearance required
- CPR and First Aid Certificates desired
ICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Standing and walking for sustained periods of time on uneven terrain and up and down curbs
- Lift 25 pounds without assistance, 50 pounds with assistance
- Possess arm strength to lift and hold stop sign so it can be seen by approaching traffic
- Work outdoors in a wide range of weather conditions
- See and distinguish students both close and at a distance
- Speak in audible tones so that others can understand clearly in a crowd
- Ability to hear and understand speech in a crowded area outdoors
- Ability to blow a whistle
- Endure noise
- Remain calm in emergency or stressful situations
Dexterity of hand and fingers to hold hand held radio or phone or both
