Job Description - Certificated Librarian

FUNCTION:

To provide a wide variety and range of materials that will invite intellectual growth and to aid all patrons in acquiring the skill needed to take full advantage of library resources. 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED OR RECEIVED:

Reports to High School Principal.

 MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

-        Initiate, develop, and implement policies and procedures for the operation of the library media center in keeping with the school’s and the school system’s philosophy, objectives, and needs.

-        Provide the leadership for the assessment and implementation of the goals, functions, and priorities of the library media program.

-        Implement a sequence of goals for the short and long range development of the library media program.

-        Develop and implement a continuous evaluation plan to identify strengths and weaknesses of the library media program.

-        Prepare and administer the library budget.

-        Evaluate, select, requisition, prepare for circulation, publicize and distribute all library materials and equipment.

-        Participate at curriculum meetings.

-        Assist and provide resources to District classified library/media center staff (20% of assignment).

-        Attend and participate in faculty meetings.

-        Work with teachers in planning and implementing those assignments likely to lead to extended use of the library resources, including computers and educational software.

-        Help students to develop habits of independent library use.

-        Counsel with and give reading guidance to students who have special reading problems or unusual intellectual interests.

-        Motivate and guide pupils in the development of reading, viewing and listening skills, attitudes and appreciation.

-        Establish and maintain an atmosphere in which library media staff, faculty and students work harmoniously at optimum levels.

-        Implement an in-service program for faculty in the utilization of materials, equipment, technology and services of the library media center.

-        Operate, coordinate, and instruct students in the use of audio-visual and computer equipment; manage computer network and trouble shoot individual computer problems.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (continued):

-        Work with administrator coordinating GATE program.

-        Participate actively in the library and other educational and professional associations on the local, regional, state and national levels.

-        Engage in continuous study and in-service activities for professional growth.

-        Demonstrate emotional stability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Certificate Required:

A valid prerequisite California teaching credential, a California-approved library media services credential, an out-of-state library services program of at least 30 graduate units, or enrollment in a California Commission approved program.

Education:

Master’s Degree only preferred.

Experience:

-        Minimum of one year of high school library experience preferred.

-        Knowledge of the use and operation of a variety of multi-media, including computers.

Personal Qualities:

-        Competence in area of assignment.

-        Empathy for pupils.

-        Enthusiasm for education of pupils.

-        Ability to communicate effectively with pupils, associates, parents, and supervisors.

-        Dependability flexibility, and good judgement.

Also applicant will need a Special Class Authorization which authorizes departmentalize instruction in information literacy, digital literacy and digital citizenship. A master’s degree and minimum of one year of high school library experience is preferred.
