Substitute Teacher

The Brandeis School, an independent Jewish day school in San Francisco, seeks substitute teachers for our students. Our school program is designed to provide a supportive, creative, and stimulating environment where students strive for social and emotional well-being and academic excellence.

 

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Director of Lower School

Position Purpose: Substitute teachers for grades K-8

 

Essential Functions:

 

• Teach a creative course of study in a developmentally appropriate manner.

 

• Follow, develop and enhance existing curriculum.

 

• Create an inclusive classroom environment through regular class meetings, supportive exchanges with students, and clear expectations for community behavior.

 

• Collaborate with other teachers, educators, and specialists.

 

• Be a positive and contributing member of the professional community.

 

• Support and follow the school policies and procedures.

 

Qualifications:

 

• B.A. degree.

 

• Must be at least 18 years of age.

 

• Have a current TB Assessment.

 

• Must take and clear a fingerprint test and background check.

 

• Must have demonstrated abilities to supervise and guide multi-level aged students.

 

• Must have a ready smile and enjoy working with school-aged youth.

 

• Possess a working knowledge of libraries and resources.

 

• Must be responsible, calm, and assertive while supervising youth ages 6-15, and setting strong boundaries regarding their safety, well being, and interactions with other students.

 

• Recent experience working with kindergarten to eighth grade students in a classroom setting.

 

• Ability to follow and implement lesson plans.

 

• Ability to work both independently and cooperatively with others.

 

• Demonstrated classroom management skills.

 

• Flexible about working with elementary and/or middle school children.

 

• Hebrew language skills a plus.

 

• Teaching credential preferred.

 

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

 

• Regularly sit, stand, talk, and listen

 

• Visually intercept visitors

 

• Regularly use close and distance vision

 

• Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs

 

• Turn, bend, reach, and occasionally use a ladder

 

• Must be able to work in an outdoor west San Francisco environment (often foggy and cold) and a climate-controlled classroom
