Job Description / Essential Elements:    Print   

BASIC FUNCTION

Under direction of an assigned supervisor, perform skilled metal work including maintenance, fabrication and repair welding and cutting; perform maintenance duties involving maintaining and repairing District fences; may be assigned to assist or perform a wide variety of general maintenance work in other trades areas.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:  Incumbents in the classification may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.

  • Construct, alter or repair metal surfaces including doors, fences, gates, playground, window frames and sashes, sports equipment, pipes and all applicable surfaces. (E1)
  • Design, fabricate and weld metal objects. (E1)
  • Perform skilled oxyacetylene and electric arc welding, soldering, brazing in rebuilding, repairing, fabricating, equipment, tools and materials. (E1)
  • Fabricate special parts, structures and equipment from oral directions, sketches and blueprints; adjust and maintain welding equipment, orders materials, supplies and equipment. (E1)
  • Lay out materials in preparation for fabricating and fusing. (E1)
  • Finish welding work, remove slag, grinds, smooth surfaces; cut and burn metal parts. (E1)
  • Repair unsafe conditions including worn playground equipment, broken or protruding pipes, classroom, food service and athletic equipment. (E1)
  • Estimate amount of time and materials necessary to complete work assignments. (E2)
  • Assist with a wide variety of general maintenance work in other skilled or unskilled trades whenever available. (E3)
  • Maintains parts and records in the welding section of maintenance shop. (E3)
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

A.         Graduation from High School or equivalent

 

B.         Supplemental coursework or training equivalent to a welding apprenticeship program and four (4) years of journey-level welder experience.

            Or

                        Any combination of education, training, and/or experience which demonstrates ability to perform the essential duties may be substituted for the required experience and/or education.

 

 KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Methods, tools, equipment and procedures for fabrication, construction and repair of metal objects.
  • Basic use of tools involved in related trades such as carpentry and plumbing.
  • Regulatory requirements for playground equipment and accessibility.
  • Health and safety regulations.
  • Technical aspects of field of specialty.
  • Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.
  • Properties and qualities of various metals and their proper fusing temperatures.
  • Shop mathematics applicable to the welding trade.

 

ABILITY TO:

  • Operate a variety of tools and equipment utilized in the welding trade.
  • Operate a variety of general maintenance equipment such as tractor, forklift, high lift, dump truck and jackhammer.
  • Plan and work from blueprints, shop drawings and sketches.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Plan and organize work.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Operate a District vehicle.
  • Perform skilled fabrication, welding and metal cutting work using appropriate tools and materials safely and efficiently.
  • Accurately and skillfully judge metal and component temperatures, quality of welded joints.
  • Estimate materials and labor costs.
  • Maintain secure tools and equipment.
  • Keep work areas in a clean, orderly condition.

 

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
  • Kneeling, standing or walking for extended periods of time.
  • Seeing to read and understand written materials.
  • Bending or twisting at the waist to operate equipment.
  • Reaching overhead and horizontally.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of equipment.
  • Lift or move up to 100 pounds. 

 

ENVIRONMENT:

  • Indoor, outdoor and industrial shop environment.
  • Subject to time lines and interruptions.
  • Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and fumes from various chemicals.
  • Occasionally works evenings or weekends.

 

HAZARDS:

  • Machinery having moving parts.
  • Exposed to very high temperatures, fumes and flying dust particles.
  • Occasionally works at heights.
  • Noise level is usually loud.

 

Requirements / Qualifications

1. A certificate stating freedom from Tuberculosis required upon hire. 2. A valid California Driver’s License. 3. Current DMV printout (within last 30 days) 4. Valid First Aid Certification (no online courses). 5. Valid CPR Certification (no online courses). 6. Valid Welding Certification from the American Welding Society.

All required documentation MUST be submitted and attached to the application in order to be considered and to move forward in the hiring process. Failure to attach ALL documentation required will result in disqualification. Candidates selected for appointment are required to be fingerprinted at the employee’s expense and must receive DOJ and FBI clearance before beginning work. Employees must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of the position without hazard to themselves or others.
