LOCKSMITH
PURPOSE STATEMENT
The Locksmith performs skilled locksmith work in the repair, alteration, installation and keying of locks on buildings, equipment, lockers and vehicles; resolves immediate operational and/or safety concerns; maintains District keying system; and maintains a preventive maintenance program.
FUNCTIONS
• Coordinates with administration, staff and other trades on the completion of projects and work orders.
• Inspects locks and accessories (e.g. panic bars, latches, door closures, hinges, etc.), ensures security and safety, and identifies necessary repairs and preventive maintenance.
• Installs locking systems and door hardware.
• Maintains tools and equipment.
• Prepares documentation (e.g. cost and material estimates, key inventory control, etc.).
• Repairs various items, systems and/or components (e.g. locks, lockers, latches, closers, hinges, emergency exit devices, etc.).
• Requests equipment and supplies.
• Responds to emergency situations and resolves immediate safety and/or access concerns.
• Transports items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, etc.) to various job sites.
• Cuts new or duplicate keys.
• Researches a wide variety of topics (e.g. new products, techniques, etc.).
• Maintains District vehicle (e.g. checking fluid levels, tire pressure, etc.) in proper working condition.
• Maintains manual and electronic documents, files and records (e.g. work orders, quotes, vendor catalogs, etc.).
• Coordinates various activities (e.g. fire extinguisher and student locker maintenance, etc.).
• Re-keys locks and changes combinations.
• Assists other personnel as maybe required.
• Performs related duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of experience and training which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above. An example of an acceptable combination is: Three years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of locks and related hardware.

SKILLS are required to perform skilled locksmith work in the installation, maintenance and repair of locks on doors and cabinets; use the tools of the locksmith trade, including the carpentry tools required for lock and panic exit device installation; use materials and equipment involved in locksmith work; diagnose repair needs by sound and feel of the movement of internal parts; operate power machinery of the locksmith trade; use a propane torch.

KNOWLEDGE of methods, materials, tools, techniques, and equipment used in locksmith work; a wide variety of tools and standard practices and processes of the locksmith trade; locking devices available including electronic equipment and their uses; construction and repair of various types of locks; record-keeping and report preparation techniques; codes and safety regulations pertaining to exits and locks in case of fire and for the protection of disabled persons.

ABILITY to understand and follow oral and written directions; communicate effectively with others; perform simple and repetitive tasks; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; work independently with minimum direction; drive a motor vehicle safely to various sites to perform duties of position; observe safety precautions and procedures; maintain a work pace appropriate to a given workload; establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, fellow employees, teachers, and administrators; understand, be sensitive to and respect the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disabilities and sexual orientation of students, teachers, administrators and staff; maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 45% walking, and 35% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and some hazardous conditions.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between California Teamsters Public, Professional & Medical Employees Union, local 911 Maintenance & Operations Unit, and Palm Springs Unified School District.
