Pacific Elementary School Garden Instructor

Pacific School is a public school serving approximately 130 preschool-6th grade students. The Garden Instructor will be joining a collegial and supportive staff with a unique history of leadership in experiential education and hands-on learning. The Pacific School Life Lab has been running for 30 plus years and grows food for the FoodLab School Meal Program. The FoodLab program is a unique meal program where 5th and 6th grade students cook a fresh meal for the whole school community each day. Pacific School is located in Davenport, just 10 miles north of Santa Cruz.
Under the direction of the Principal/Superintendent and the volunteer Garden Director, the Garden Instructor will instruct approximately four 1-hour garden classes per week to preschool through fourth grade classes. Lesson planning is guided by a multi-year school-wide garden curriculum. Additionally, the Garden Instructor will perform garden maintenance and coordinate winter and summer care. Typical tasks conducted with student help include bed preparation, planting, weeding, composting, pruning, and harvesting vegetables, orchard fruits, and flowers for use by the school cafeteria and other school programs.
Experience working with PreK - 4th grade students in a garden setting
Experience with vegetable gardening and garden maintenance
Experience with fruit tree orchard management
Good interpersonal, communication, and "classsroom management" skills
Light carpentry skills
Aerobic and vermi-composting experience
$12.40 to $18.96 per hour depending on years of experience. This is an employee position. No benefits.
Hours and Schedule:
Approximately 7 hours per week, from approximately late August through mid-December and mid-February through early June, plus a few hours coordinating garden maintenance during winter and summer. Current garden classes take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but this schedule could be changed. The position will begin in mid-February of 2018.
