Pacific Elementary School Garden Instructor

Pacific School:

Pacific School (www.pacificesd.org) is a public school serving approximately 130 preschool-6th grade students. The Garden Instructor will be joining a collegial and supportive staff with an extensive history of leadership in experiential education and hands-on learning. The Pacific School Life Lab has been running for 30 plus years and grows food for the FoodLab School Meal Program. The FoodLab program is a unique meal program where 5th and 6th grade students cook a fresh meal for the whole school community each day. Pacific School is located in Davenport, just 10 miles north of Santa Cruz.

Job Description:

Under the direction of the Principal/Superintendent, the Garden Instructor will instruct approximately four 1-hour garden classes per week to preschool through fourth grade students. Lesson planning is guided by a multi-year school-wide garden curriculum. Additionally, the Garden Instructor will perform garden and school grounds maintenance and coordinate winter and summer care. Typical tasks conducted with student help include bed preparation, planting, weeding, composting, pruning, and harvesting vegetables, orchard fruits, herbs, and flowers for use by the school cafeteria and other school programs. The role includes organizing and hosting an annual Grandparents’ Tea open house and fundraiser and organizing and providing training for summer garden volunteers. The Garden Instructor position may be combined with the Groundskeeper position. If the two positions are filled by different people, the Garden Instructor will maintain good communication with and coordinate garden and grounds care with the Groundskeeper.

Required Skills:

  • Experience working with PreK - 4th grade students in a garden setting
  • Experience with vegetable gardening and garden maintenance
  • Experience with fruit tree orchard management
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills

Desired Skills:

  • Light carpentry skills
  • Aerobic and vermi-composting experience
  • Spanish language skills
  • Current first aid/CPR certificate

Hours and Schedule:

Approximately 7 hours per week. Student instruction to occur from mid-August through mid-December and mid-February through early June. Current garden classes take place on Fridays, but if absolutely necessary this schedule could possibly be changed. Student instruction will begin in mid-February of 2020. Total of 220 hours per school year, prorated for late start in 2019-20.
