Position Summary:
The Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Assessment is delegated responsibility by the Principal for those areas in the academic program having to do with curriculum, testing, on-line grading, scheduling, course placement, and accreditation. Areas of shared responsibility include faculty staffing and the supervision of the academic and counseling departments. Areas of primary direction include departmental and school-wide curriculum, student placements and scheduling, the student testing program, student records, textbooks, instructional resources, and teaching methodology. The Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Assessment assists the AP for Instruction and Student Life and the Dean of Students with teacher supervision and the new teacher orientation programs.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Specific duties include:
1. Is a member of the Principal’s Administrative Team.
- Co-Chairs the monthly academic board meetings with the AP for Instruction and Student Life.
- Facilitates department and school-wide curriculum review and revision.
- Assists the AP for Instruction and Student Life with the hiring of faculty and staff.
- Assists the AP for Instruction and Student Life with teacher supervision.
- Supervises the Math and Visual and Performing Arts departments (including formal classroom observations and summative evaluations)
- Directs the various computer processing programs in the areas of Student Scheduling, the Student Perception Survey (teachers and counselors), Grade Distributions, Powerschool reports, the JSN Student Profile Survey, admissions, etc.
- Oversees the work of the Registrar and is ultimately responsible (along with the Director of Student Scheduling) for the accuracy of student transcripts.
- Oversees the activities of the department chairs in the areas of curriculum, department staffing, student placements, textbook selections, annual budget planning, instructional resources, and the summer reading program.
- In collaboration with the Department Chairs, publishes the Textbook List and approves the textbook order each semester.
- In consultation with the Department Chairs, the Counseling Department, students/parents and the Director of Scheduling, approves all placement decisions and changes.
- In consultation with the Department Chairs and the Director of Scheduling, approves class sections and staffing, and designs the Master Schedule of classes and the Master Classroom Schedule.
- Oversees the activities of the counseling department in the areas of student placements, testing, Crisis Counseling, Academic Probation, and the publication of the School Profile, Counseling Brochure and the Planning for College Handbook.
- Oversees the activities of the Librarian, the Director of Student Scheduling, the Director of Testing, and the Bookstore Manager.
- Assists the AP for Instruction and Student Life and the Principal in the creation of the School Activities Calendar.
- Coordinates the publishing of the school Activities Calendar, the Student-Parent Handbook and the other curricular and co-curricular program handbooks.
- In collaboration with the department chairs, updates and submits the annual UC a-g course certification list, the NCAA Clearing House course list, and the academic Course Catalogue.
- In collaboration with the Counseling Department, approves all courses taken for credit off campus.
- In collaboration with the Counseling Department and Department Chairs, is responsible for teacher-student-parent academic mediation.
- In collaboration with the Directors of Scheduling, is responsible for the preparation and distribution of Report Cards, Progress Reports, Powerschool Grade Reports, D-F-I Lists, Academic Probation Lists, Transcript labels, Grade Distribution Reports, GPA-Rank reports, Honor Roll Lists and the awarding of diplomas.
- Organizes quarterly student/counselor Academic Probation Meetings and the Mid-Year, End-of-Year teacher/counselor/administrator Year-Level meetings.
- In collaboration with the Counseling Department and the Director of the Academic Support Center, oversees the progress of students considered “At Risk” upon acceptance.
- Supervises and supports the Director of the Academic Support Center.
- In collaboration with the Directors of Testing and various academic departments, directs the administration of semester exams and all standardized testing (HSPT, Freshmen Challenge Tests, EDT, PLAN, PSAT, ACT, SAT, Advanced Placement, National Foreign Language exams) and “extended time” and “alternate” versions of these tests to include all processing and the assignment of prefects.
- Coordinates the distribution of test-prep materials and workshop opportunities for all national testing programs.
- Is responsible for publishing the results of the various testing programs, including national awards, and collaboratively analyzing the results for any impact they might have on curriculum planning.
- Coordinates the annual Back-to-School Night and the Parent-Teacher Conference Night.
- Assists the Director of Admissions with the organization of Open House and other admissions and school-wide events and the supervision of co-curricular activities.
- Assists the Alumni Director with the annual Career Day.
- In consultation with other offices, prepares the annual surveys and reports for JSN, NCEA, Diocese of Sacramento, the Calif Dept of Educ Private School Affidavit, C.I.F. and others.
- Coordinates the administration of the annual JSN Student Profile Survey to freshmen and seniors and the annual senior exit interviews.
- Assists the Principal with the monthly report to the Board of Trustees and Principal’s Newsletter.
- Assists the Principal with the formulation and monitoring of budgets in the following areas: Academic Departments, Library, Counseling, Academic (AP Curriculum and Technology, Report Cards, Testing, Exchange Account, Accreditation, Catalogues and Printing)
- Serves on one or more sub committees of the Board of Trustees at the discretion of the Principal.
- At the discretion of the Principal, contributes to the annual update of the WASC-WCEA process.
- Assists the AP for Instruction and Student Life with the annual student academic awards process and the graduation ceremony as well as the publication of the Graduation and Baccalaureate Liturgy Programs.
