Position: IEP Instructional Assistant

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
Under the administrative direction of the Director of Special Education, the direct supervision of the site Principal, and depending upon the student, under the supervision of the District’s Nurse, and indirect supervision from specific Special Education teachers, is responsible for the personal and specialized physical health care, mobility assistance, feeding and toileting needs of identified students, and assists with the student’s instructional support. Employees in this position may be required to use District vehicles to transport students to and from appointments and special programs, and assist other employees in lifting and toileting qualified students. Specialized medically related training may be necessary to provide for the needs of the assigned student(s).


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Provides instructional assistance for the daily learning operations of a special learning program for individual students as directed by the teacher, which may include “push in” activities.
Travels from room to room with the student and may travel site to site with the student.
Supervises the student during lunch and out of class activities.
Under the training and direction of the District Nurse, provides specialized physical health care services, such as: oral suctioning, catheterization, tube feeding, tracheotomy care, colon incannular cleaning and suctioning, or other services that require medically related training.
Cleans medical equipment as prescribed by the District Nurse.
Lifts students in and out of locomotive devices and on and off toilets and changing areas.
Assists students with personal hygiene needs, including toileting and changing clothes
Assists students in communicating with others.
Assists students in using books, classroom materials and equipment.
Feeds or assists in feeding assigned students.
Supplies mobility assistance in class and around the school, between schools and/or in off site locations as required.
Administers medication under the direction of the District Nurse.
May use a District vehicle to transport students to off site locations.
Alerts nurse to possible health related concerns.
Renders first aid when required.
Carries out clerical functions related to classroom duties for the assigned student.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Observes student progress and reports to the student’s teacher.
Assists the teacher in related classroom activities.
May perform yard duty supervision assignments to watch identified students as required.
Under appropriate supervision, conducts classroom activities in the absence of the teacher.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Requires knowledge of:
Basic elements of good English usage, spelling and arithmetic.
Knowledge basic medical and first aid practices.
Basic classroom clerical functions; filing, word processing, data entry.

Requires ability to:
Read and write at a level sufficient for the performance of assigned duties.
Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
Understand the needs of children and to effectively relate to those needs in a learning situation.
Obtain Travis Unified School District specialized training.
Safely lift or assist in lifting and carrying students of varying weights.
Work independently with a minimum of supervision.
Prepare and compile accurate records.
Understand and apply the principles of confidentiality and professional ethics.
Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.

Certifications:
Red Cross First Aid valid during the term of employment
Red Cross Approved CPR valid during the term of employment
(Valid EMT, LVN, or RN certification is acceptable in place of the above)
Valid Class C California Drivers License valid during the term of employment.

Desired Training:
Training in child growth or development.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical requirements indicated below are necessary to perform the essential job functions. Reasonable accommodation will be made to enable a person with a disability to perform these functions.

Sufficient vision to read printed material, see distant objects with clarity, judge distances and spatial relationships and identify and distinguish objects.
Sufficient hearing to hear the conversation in person, on the telephone, and hear sounds clearly up to 20 feet.
Ability to speak in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation, on the telephone and when addressing groups.
Ability to exert up to 65 pounds of force to lift, push, pull, drag, or otherwise move objects.
This type of work requires frequent and continuous standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods of time.
Sufficient manual dexterity and/or mobility to grasp and or manipulate objects, move about the work area, move around the work site and move between work sites.
Employees in this classification work in a standard office environment and classrooms, and occasionally outdoors.
