Colton Joint Unified School District Class Title: Lifeguard BASIC FUNCTION: Under general supervision, observes and supervises the activities of swimmers in and around the pool and adjacent areas and performs life-saving procedures. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES • Observe and supervise the activities of swimmers in and around the pool facilities. E • Maintain discipline and order around pool area. E • Administer first aid, CPR, and artificial respiration when necessary. E • Promote water safety and health rules on pool deck. E • Inform users of pool safety and precautions. E • Explain and enforce pool rules and regulations. E • Ensure that pool safety equipment is in place and in working order. E • Check the pool area for safety hazards. E • Monitor swimming pool grounds to ensure the safety and welfare of swimmers. E • Answer inquiries from the public relating to pool regulations and facilities. E • Rescue persons in distress or danger of drowning. E • Lift swimmers in distress out of pool with or without assistance. E • Perform other related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of • Lifesaving methods and techniques including artificial respiration and CPR. • Water safety. • Pool operation and general maintenance methods. • Methods of maintaining pool areas and facilities in a clean, safe and sanitary manner. • American Red Cross policies and procedures. • District organization, operations, policies and objectives. Ability to • Swim with proficiency and endurance. • Maintain constant observation of assigned areas. • Observe students during swim classes, preventing dangerous situations from developing and rescuing persons in distress. • Perform first aid and CPR. • Understand and follow oral and written instructions. • Learn, interpret, apply and explain policies, procedures, rules and regulations. • Maintain current knowledge of program rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions. • Learn and apply emergency procedures in the event of an accident or emergency. • Communicate effectively with students and patrons to assure student safety and well-being and rules, regulations and safety requirements are met. • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. • Understand and be sensitive to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of students, teachers and staff. • Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Education • High School Diploma or Equivalent. Proof Required. Experience • Sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above. Licenses/Certificates • Lifeguard Training Certificate is required • First Aid Certificate is required • CPR Certificate is required WORKING CONDITIONS WHICH MAY OCCUR • Work outside exposed to the weather • Work on surfaces that are slippery and wet • Exposed to direct sunlight • Supervise or control combative persons • Work at heights up to 6 feet • Tasks performed involve leaning, bending forward, kneeling or squatting PHYSICAL ABILITIES • Muscular Tension to lift, carry or pull students out of a pool or move objects. • Far Visual Acuity • Peripheral Vision • Speech Intelligibility in Noise • Sound Localization • Flexibility • Whole Body Coordination
