JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, reinforce lessons presented by the classroom teacher by tutoring students individually or in small groups on basic academic subjects; supervise independent study sessions; assist in maintaining classroom discipline; and perform related duties as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
Positions in this class require practical knowledge of standard procedures acquired through moderate training and experience. The classroom teacher provides non-recurring assignments by indicating what is to be done, deadlines to be met, and assignment priority. The employee uses initiative in
carrying out recurring assignments independently, without specific instruction, but refers deviations, problems, or unfamiliar situations not covered by instructions to the teacher. Personal contact is made with students, parents, and school district staff to obtain, clarify, or give and receive facts and information.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
1. Assist teacher to prepare instructional and test materials for use in the classroom; correct tests and daily assignments; and prepare for and assist with various classroom projects.
2. Oversee students participating in activities, lunch and recess periods, and when on field trips.
3. Assist the classroom teacher to set up materials or education lessons; prepare bulletin board materials; and set up and operate A/V equipment, computers, and other instructional aids.
4. Listen to and reinforce instruction to individuals or small groups of students in reading, spelling, math, and other subjects; administer and score tests; correct daily work assignments; and answer students’ questions.
5. Observe and report to teacher student academic progress and behavior.
6. Maintain classroom records including attendance reports; collate and prepare letters and notices to be sent home to parents; and collect permission slips to attend school activities off campus.
7. Assist teacher to maintain student order in the classroom and on the playground according to approved procedures; and oversee the class for brief periods when the teacher is away from the room.
8. Accompany students going from one location on campus to another.
9. Perform a variety of clerical tasks for the classroom teacher, which may include typing assignments.
10. Work with special education students and assist these students with communication, self-help, psycho-motor, social/behavioral, and prevocational skill development.
11. May take special education students into the community to develop and improve their skills in the use of public facilities, transportation, and other community resources.
12. Implement behavior management strategies to control students who become aggressive or become emotionally unstable.
13. May provide basic first aid to injured students.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Candidates must be able to perform essential duties 1-13 above with or without reasonable accommodation.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Equivalent to high school diploma.
- One (1) year of experience tutoring students or working as a teachers' aid in a classroom.
- Completion of two years of higher education study OR possession of an Associate's or higher level degree, OR pass assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics OR reading, writing, and mathematics readiness.

LICENSE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Certification in basic First Aid and CPR
- May require a valid driver’s license
- This position is subject to the provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act.
- Requires pre-employment clearance (fingerprint and tuberculosis)

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Classroom and outdoor work environment.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Acceptable knowledge of a range of high school courses including but not limited to math algebra, science, English, history/civics, and writing.
- Effective methods to tutor students in standard academic subjects.
- Techniques to motivate students to produce their best work.
- English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Basic computer operations and word processing software.
- Basic first aid and CPR procedures.

ABILITY TO:
- Work effectively with students who are at different academic skill levels.
- Give as well as receive and implement oral and written directions.
- Understand the needs and learning styles of students and develop a rapport with them.
- Organize materials to achieve educational objectives.
- Write routine reports and correspondence.
- Speak effectively with teachers, faculty, staff, and students.
- Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Exercise sound judgment and work effectively under pressure.
- Some positions may require bilingual skills.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
- Vision sufficient to read fine printed material.
- Hearing sufficient to hear conversation in person and on the telephone.
- Speech sufficient to speak in an understandable voice.
- Stamina sufficient to sit or stand for long periods of time.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to write legibly and operate standard office and classroom equipment.
- Upper and lower body strength sufficient to lift and transfer students (weighing 40-50 lbs. without assistance, 80+lbs with assistance.)
- Upper body and arm strength sufficient to push students in wheelchairs around campus and in the community.
- Ambulatory ability sufficient to walk with students on campus and in the community for up to 60 continuous minutes, and ascend stairs, wheelchair ramps, and inclines around campus.
