Job Description / Essential Elements: Print   
SANTA CLARA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTER ASSISTANT-ELEMENTARY BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an Elementary School Principal and the Specialist for District Library Services, assist in providing library services in an assigned elementary school library/media center; check books and materials in and out at the circulation desk; shelve library materials; provide literature enrichment activities; assist students and staff in the selection of library materials; assure students and teachers have access to library materials for classes, assignments, and recreational reading; implement the District's plan for the acquisition of library skills and library orientation; train and provide work direction to student helpers and parent volunteers. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Implement the District plan to provide library services at an assigned middle school or independently at an elementary school library/media center; schedule and coordinate library activities in accordance with various class schedules and school programs; promote student use of the library for research and reading pleasure. E Check books and materials in and out at the circulation desk; scan books or stamp books and cards with appropriate dates and file card appropriately; enter amount of late fee or other fines in the computer system as applicable; process returned books and place in appropriate shelf location. E Assist teachers in researching materials for classroom use; notify teachers of newly-arrived books applicable to classroom topics or themes. E Assist students in locating and selecting desired or needed materials from book shelves or with the use of the card catalog or computerized catalog system and subject bibliographies; assist student's use of audio-visual materials and equipment; maintain the card catalog in an orderly and accurate condition. E Operate computerized reference resources such as a CD-ROM to assist students and teachers with research. E Conduct library/media center orientations at the beginning of the school year and as needed to explain and demonstrate the use and location of library materials, the card catalog, basic Dewey Decimal system principles, resource materials, and various sections such as biography. E Select and read books aloud to classes and provide literature enrichment activities during library times. E Prepare and maintain card files and card catalogs; maintain records and implement procedures pertaining to such library data as lost and damaged books, overdue books, and student and staff use of the library/media center. E Arrange displays of student work as it is sent to the library; design and prepare appropriate library displays, room decorations, bulletin boards, and seasonal bibliographies; maintain a clean and orderly library/media center environment; monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior. E Operate a variety of library/media center equipment, including a computer, typewriter, VCR, tape duplicating equipment, and projectors. E Maintain discipline and order within the elementary library/media center; enforce discipline procedures according to established guidelines. E Train, orient and provide work direction to student helpers and parent volunteers to assist with circulation, processing, shelving, and filing. E Repair and mend books upon return as needed; withdraw books from library circulation due to worn condition or damage. E Attend meetings and District in-services as requested; notify appropriate personnel regarding equipment and facility maintenance and repair needs. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Basic library practices, procedures and terminology. Basic Dewey Decimal system and card/computer cataloging system. Basic library reference materials and sources. Filing, indexing and inventory procedures. Modern office practices, procedures and equipment. Record-keeping techniques. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Oral and written communications skills. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. ABILITY TO: Implement the District plan to provide library services at an assigned elementary school. Learn, explain, and apply school and District rules and policies applicable to the library. Check books and materials in and out at the circulation desk; Shelve library materials; Assist students and staff in the selection of library materials; Process a variety of library materials. Basic operation of a computer terminal and data entry and retrieval techniques. Perform clerical duties such as filing, duplications and typing. Maintain library in a neat and orderly condition. Bend, stoop and properly lift up to 25 pounds. Make arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately. Work independently with little direction. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Maintain records and prepare reports. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and one year clerical or instructional experience working with children in an organized setting, including some experience in a library or media center environment. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: School library environment. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Position requires vision to read books and media materials, climbing ladders to put up displays, lifting and carrying books weighing up to 25 pounds, pushing and pulling carts, walking and standing for extended periods of time, reaching horizontally and above the shoulders to shelve and reach books, bending and kneeling.

Some experience in a library or media center environment is preferred. Candidate with knowledge of basic library practices, procedures and terminology, the Dewey Decimal system and card/computer cataloging system, library reference materials and sources, as well as knowledge of filing, indexing and inventory procedures is preferred. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary, as well as good oral and written communication skills are essential. Candidate must have computer skills and knowledge of an automated library system is desirable.
