ORANGE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

 

BUS DRIVER

 

 

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, drives a large school bus over an assigned route in the transportation of pupils; and does related work as required.

 

Representative Duties

Drives a school bus over a designated route in accordance with a time schedule, picking up and discharging school children; assists in loading and unloading pupils; transports children and teachers on field trips; keeps bus clean and reports mechanical defects; maintains order among children on the bus, following district policy; submits daily and other reports as required; washes and cleans bus; fuels bus; checks and adds bus before operating; operates bus in compliance with district policy, state codes and regulations, and state education code section 14203.

 

Organizational Responsibilities

Positions in this class report to the Coordinator of the Transportation Department.  Positions are assigned to regularly scheduled and laid out routes, and special excursions as assigned.

 

ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

 

Training and Experience – Equivalent to: Graduation from high school; and

 

Good work history, demonstrating reliability and responsibility.  Good driving record.  Some experience in the operation of heavy vehicles is desirable.

 

Knowledge and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of: Safe driving practices, safe working methods and procedures.

 

Familiarity with: The provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code applicable to the operation of motor vehicles in the transportation of school children.

 

Ability to: Drive a school bus safely; maintain order among school children o a school bus; obtain a California School Bus Driver’s Certificate; follow oral and written directions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, the public, and other workers.

 

Licenses

A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License, Class II.

A valid California School Bus Driver’s Certificate, issued by the California Highway Patrol.

 

A current First Aid Certificate issued by the American Red Cross, or pass equivalent tests given by the California Highway Patrol.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

 

Medium Work:

Positions in this class occasionally perform work which involves the frequent lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects which may approximate 50 pounds and may occasionally weigh up to 100 pounds.

 

Mobility:

Positions in this class require the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend;

Positions in this class require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.

 

Vision:

Positions in this class must meet the vision requirements established by the State of California for school bus drivers.
