Under general supervision from the librarian, perform a variety of clerical and paraprofessional duties in a school library including ordering, cataloging, processing, and circulation of materials. Help students, teachers, and parents take full advantage of library resources.  

Representative Duties:  Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions listed below.  Duties may vary from library to library at each school site.  This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principal job elements.

 

Manage the circulation system including: check library materials in and out; maintain and update circulation and shelf list files; communicate with District’s technical support to solve database problems; process and track notices for overdue materials; manage lost book and petty cash accounts; shelve materials accurately; and maintain neatness and organization in the library.

 

Process materials for the library collection including: preview, prepare, process and track orders for new materials for use and circulation; maintain the library’s database; keep financial records of orders; make phone calls to outside vendors, District office staff, and patrons; compose correspondence and generate reports, invoices, requisitions, cards, lists and other materials; and repair worn materials.

 

Assist students, teachers, and parents in finding library materials using the on-line catalog, CD-ROM products, and searching the Internet; stay current on technologies related to library services as they become available.

Work with students in learning library and research skills; supervise students in the effective use of the library.

Prepare work schedules for student teaching assistants and parent volunteers; supervise their work.

Prepare displays, bulletin boards, learning centers and instructional packets for the library.

Open and close the library each day.

Supervise students and maintain discipline in the absence of the librarian.

 

Assist with special projects and perform other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:  Any combination of training, experience, and/or education equivalent to a high school diploma, two years of general clerical experience preferably in the library setting, and/or an Associate of Arts degree or certificate in library media technology.

Skills:  Organizational ability and attention to detail; ability to use word-processing and/or all computer software used by the library; clerical skills including keyboarding, record-keeping, and  photocopying; electronic research skills; ability to work well with students, teachers, and parents.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: 

Knowledge of children’s and young adult’s literature.

Organizing and maintaining automated library and office systems; installing and using a variety of CD-ROM products.

Multifaceted library research skills.

Cataloging and record-keeping techniques for monitoring and managing library inventory control.

Basic library terminology and standard library practices including the Dewey Decimal System, the Follett Database System, and maintaining library media and equipment.

Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, respect and courtesy.

Effective techniques in guiding and supervising students and student teaching assistants.

Ability to:

Meet District standards of professional attitude as outlined in Board Policy 4219.21 Code of Ethics for Classified Personnel.

Relate to students in individual or small group situations.

Perform clerical and complex record-keeping work using independent judgment.

Give and receive oral and written instructions in English.

Spell correctly, use proper English, and make simple arithmetic computations.

Learn pertinent library procedures and functions quickly and apply them under general supervision.

Operate standard office machines, computers, and a variety of audio visual equipment.

Make minor repairs to library materials.

Work cooperatively and communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.

 

Working Conditions: 

 

Environment:  School library; constant interruptions.

 

Physical Abilities:  Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone; adequate vision to read, prepare and proofread documents; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment; kneeling, bending at the waist and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store files and supplies; lifting light objects.
