SECONDARY CLASSROOM TEACHER – MUSIC MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: -Teaches skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music, and in instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) and/or choral music (chorus, choral ensemble) to secondary pupils. Utilizes appropriate learning activities. -Plans a balanced music program. -Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil. Encourages pupils to develop individual musical skills to the greatest extent possible. -Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils. -Maintains surveillance over school-owned music, robes, uniforms, musical instruments and equipment in order to prevent loss or abuse. Makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required. -Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment during individual practice, group rehearsals, and musical performance. -Evaluates each pupil’s musical growth and performance, assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group. Prepares progress reports. -Plans, rehearses, and directs pupils in musical programs for school and community. -Shall support other departments and home activities with musical requirements and needs as defined by the site principal. This support will take first priority over other activities located or taking place outside the school district’s boundaries. -Selects appropriate music, books, and instrumental aids to enhance learning. Requisitions books, music, robes, uniforms, musical instruments, instructional aids, and instructional supplies, and maintains required inventory records. -Develops weekly lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the basic instructional philosophy and curriculum of the District. -Provides students with the opportunity to partake in daily patriotic observance. Education Code 52720. -Monitors classroom environment to ensure clean and safe conditions exist, notifying principal of any unclean or unsafe classroom conditions. -Monitors classroom activities making students responsible for putting materials, supplies, tools, etc., safely and neatly away at the end of the class session.
