College Counselor

 

Position Description

The College Counselor will keep the academic and personal success of the St. Vincent de Paul High School students as a core focus, while striving to grow professionally and support a positive school community. The College Counselor will provide comprehensive, individualized college counseling services to students and families.  The ideal candidate will be highly skilled in the area of college counseling, with excellent communication skills. This candidate will exude energy, decisiveness, a sense of humor, and have the organizational and interpersonal skills necessary for working with a dynamic faculty, an engaged student population, and a dedicated parent community.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

College counseling

  • Counsel and assist students and parents with college, financial aid, and scholarship applications.
  • Evaluate college and scholarship applications for accuracy and omissions.
  • Proofread and make recommendations for improvement of college application and scholarship essays.
  • Complete all required forms and personalized letters of recommendation for the college admission process by the set deadlines.
  • Maintain Naviance database of students’ activities, interests, and aspirations.
  • Conduct four College Information Nights for parents.
  • Coordinate Financial Aid Night for parents.
  • Prepare juniors for college fairs and Case Studies Night.
  • Attend conferences in order to remain current and well informed about all college admissions requirements and changes in related areas.
  • Schedule visits from college representatives.
  • Arrange for outside speakers to do presentations on college-related topics (“Making College Count”).
  • Visit colleges and maintain positive and productive relationships with college admissions officers.
  • Network local high school counselors to plan joint events and support a spirit of cooperation.
  • Participate in fairs and workshops not limited to WACAC, UC, CSU, SAT.

 

Awards and Scholarships

  • Provide accurate and current scholarship information to students and parents.
  • Maintain record of all college acceptances, college of attendance, and scholarships received by seniors.
  • Compile final statistics for each graduating class (Dollar amount of scholarships received, number of students receiving multiple scholarships, etc.).
  • Coordinate completion and submission of SRJC Doyle Scholarship applications.
  • Serve as school liaison to SRJC and Petaluma Educational Foundation.
  • Maintain direct contact with scholarship donors and foundations.
  • Identify and recommend students to scholarship donors and leadership programs.
  • Produce monthly newsletters to include current scholarship offerings.
  • Update College Center page on school website regularly.
  • Notify parents of available summer programs.
  • Maintain accurate records of student information: honors, awards, scholarships, test scores, matriculation, etc.
  • Serve as St. Vincent liaison for Press Democrat Community Service Award program and the Harold Mahoney Community Achievement Awards.

 

Academic Counseling

  • Provide all academic counseling of juniors and seniors.
  • Be competent in school’s Student Information System.
  • Manage parent/student/teacher meetings when appropriate.
  • Conduct classroom presentations to prepare students for registration, testing, college application process and Naviance.
  • Annually review all 11th and 12th grade transcripts for errors, correct as needed.
  • Determine student eligibility for all academic awards.
  • Assist and advise Registration Committee in annual registration process.

 

Testing and Miscellaneous Administration

  • Compile current information on school profile.
  • Serve on Administrative Team.
  • Serve on Ceremonial Committee (Academic Awards, Baccalaureate, Graduation).
  • Accompany campus ministry team on junior and senior retreats.
  • Serve as school’s director of testing.
  • Arrange for on-site SAT/ACT Prep courses and resources.

 

Curriculum Committee

  • Assist Academic Dean with updating and maintaining a-g list courses for the UC system.
  • Inform the Curriculum Committee of changes in college admissions requirements and local trends in testing results.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, MA/MS preferred with minimum of five years’ experience in college counseling
  • Superb writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Superb communication and collaboration skills
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule including some nights and weekends
  • Energy, charisma, perseverance, integrity, self-awareness, confidence, sense of humor
  • Proficiency with Naviance and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Appropriate certification and training
