Job Title: Independent Studies Teacher
Description of basic functions and responsibilities
The Independent Studies Teacher provides instruction in the basic skill areas of Math, English, Science and Social Studies to students on an individual or small group basis; instruction may be based out of a resource center, or the teacher may be required to travel to alternate locations; maintains accurate student files and attendance records.
Supervisor: Director of Student Services
Typical duties and responsibilities:
Instructs students with individualized needs in an Independent Study instructional Setting.
Develops teaching methods and instructional materials appropriate to the needs of the students.
Delivers instruction using the approved curriculum.
Plan, develop, and utilize a variety of instructional methodology, materials and aids appropriate to the intellectual and instructional level of students from varied socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, and who possess a range of mental and emotional maturity.
Review, analyze, and evaluate the history, background, and assessment of students in designing instructional programs to meet individual educational needs.
Assesses, monitor, document and report student performance.
Assists in the preparation of reports (e.g., attendance records and credit and grade system).
Communicates with District Office and administration school of residence.
Staff, Parents, and Students regarding progress and needs.
Selects and requisitions appropriate educational supplies, materials, books, equipment, and learning aids.
Prepares, reports, files and maintains accurate student records.
Motivates and promotes the academic progress and personal development of at-risk students.
Directs, supervises and evaluates the work of assigned staff.
Attends meetings and trainings as assigned.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Employment Standards
Knowledge of:
Principles, theories, practices, methods and techniques used in curriculum development, lesson planning and instruction of Independent Study students.
Curriculum expectations for subject(s) being taught.
Principles, theories, practices, methods and techniques to create and promote positive student motivation and student learning.
Applicable sections of the State Education Code, District Policies and other applicable laws.
Current trends and research concerning the growth and development of Independent Study students.
Federal, State and District standardized assessment requirements.
Ability to:
Adapt plans and instructional delivery to meet the differentiated needs of students.
Work independently with little direction.
Create an instructional program favorable to learning and personal growth.
Maintain professional and positive relationships with students, parents, colleagues and administration.
Work in a diverse socio-economic and multicultural community.
Operate a computer and job related equipment.
Read, interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Maintain current knowledge of applicable curriculum and school instruction related regulations.
Establish and maintain a variety of accurate recordkeeping and filing systems.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.
Minimum Qualifications
Three years of full time secondary teaching experience
Minimum college degree to satisfy credential requirements
Appropriate California secondary teaching credential (Preliminary or Clear)
CLAD Certification
Must possess a valid California driver’s license
Evaluation
Semi-annually for 1st year teachers
Annually by for probationary teachers
Bi-annually for teachers with permanent status
