THE PROGRAM
SEO Scholars is a free eight-year academic program that provides motivated, low-income public high school students with an out-of-school supplemental academic curriculum, college guidance and the leadership development necessary to gain admission to, and succeed at, competitive colleges and universities. SEO Scholars San Francisco is the first expansion region for this program and aims to replicate for Bay Area students the stellar outcomes that the program has delivered in New York City.
THE JOB
The Academic Manager is a perfect role for someone who is passionate about teaching and learning and is looking have program-wide reach while also directly impacting students on a daily basis.
The Academic Manager is responsible for managing the core academic program in grades 9 to 11 for SEO Scholars in San Francisco. The Academic Manager’s primary responsibility is implementing high-quality and targeted academic programming that results in 100% of students gaining admittance to four-year colleges and universities. The role includes the recruitment, hiring and direct supervision of instructors and tutors, and successfully leading a cohort of 40-60 students through the core academic program, helping them to develop both the skills and the mindsets necessary for college success. The Academic Manager will also work closely with the Curriculum and Instruction department in New York City. The Academic Manager reports to the Executive Director.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage Academic Performance
- Lead, implement and set the overall tone for SEO Scholars’ core academic program on Saturdays, after school, and during the 5-week Summer Academy
- Provide academic advising to all 10th and 11th grade Scholars, including leading advising hours, conducting meetings for students and parents, and meeting with Scholars 1:1 or in small groups
- Develop and maintain an on-going process for analyzing student data to determine where interventions are required to ensure students are on track academically for admission to competitive colleges
- Integrate research-based non-cognitive skills and academic mindsets into academic support structures including 1:1 advising, classroom teaching, and tutoring
- Partner with 9th grade recruiter/program manager to onboard students to the core academic program
- Oversee the tracking of academic performance data for all Scholars using Salesforce – from GPA and diagnostic scores at admissions, through each semester of high school and SEO, to PSATs and SATs
- Manage Program Assistant to deliver high caliber program support
Hire, Recruit and Manage Instructors and Tutors
- Develop pipeline partnerships with teaching programs and/or other organizations to consistently provide high-quality instructional staff for the program
- Following SEO’s national model, create robust instructor on-boarding and orientation processes
- Provide ongoing instructor evaluation, coaching and support
- Review weekly feedback from instructors, as well as surface themes and issues that need to be addressed. Raise significant concerns to appropriate parties – Executive Director and national as well as local program staff
- Provide substitute instruction in ELA or math during Saturday and Summer Academy as needed
Manage Academic Interventions
- Design small-group academic interventions that incorporate academic mindsets and non-cognitive skills to ensure all Scholars successfully progress through the program’s curriculum (ELA, math, SAT prep)
- Lead and manage an effective tutoring program
- Determine what adjustments are required to the national curriculum, customizing as needed to meet the needs of SF students
REQUIREMENTS
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor or Master’s degree in education, curriculum and teaching, English, mathematics, or a related field
- At least two years of high school or middle school teaching experience
- At least one year of experience coaching, leading or managing a successful team with a demonstrated track record of success, preferably in an academic setting (e.g., experience as a grade-level lead in a school)
- Strong understanding of student-centered instructional practice
- Demonstrated ability to recruit and supervise instructors
- Experience working with ELL students preferred
- Ability to manage multiple priorities with high attention to detail
- Superior written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills, strong work ethic and high level of professionalism
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
- Ability to work a Tuesday through Saturday schedule and some evenings as dictated by programming needs
