DETAILS: Whiskeytown Environmental School (WES) is located 10 miles west of Redding, CA in the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. It is a Residential Outdoor Science School (ROSS) operated in partnership between the Shasta County Office of Education and the National Park Service.
Summer Naturalists work directly with K-8th students and high school counselors to provide a fun active summer program at a residential outdoor science school. Naturalists are in charge of facilitating hikes,games, activities, meals, and large group instruction throughout the summer camp program.
DUTIES:
Lead and supervise hikes with up to 25 children (K-8th)
Ensure the healthy and physically safe environment for all program participants
Provide a physically and emotionally safe environment for group learning
Supervise students/counselors during campus activities: meals, meal cleanup, recreation time, cabin time, etc.)
Administer first aid on trail as needed
Lead group activities and games throughout day
Work with team to manage aspects of residential outdoor school to ensure highest quality of experience for children
Act as mentor to high school counselors and campers, provide feedback and group management strategies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
? A.A. (preferably in natural, life, or physical science)
? Standard first aid and CPR
? Valid Driver’s License
? Ability to develop good rapport and positive relations with students, teachers, and parents
? Ability to communicate orally and in writing
? Ability to work lengthy hours managing small and large groups of children
? Ability to respond to crisis situations in a positive productive manner
? Ability to work flexible work hours
? Strong communication and interpersonal skills
? Positive management skills with children
? Ability to walk up to 3 miles per day
? Lifeguard certification, WFR/EMT certifications, and Spanish language skills are desirable
? Flexibility, a positive attitude and a sense of humor are absolutely required
? Personal vehicle is strongly encouraged.
HOURS:3 days of staff training in late June + 5 weeks of summer camp/ 40 hours/ week; can vary by week
AVAILABILITY: June 13th-Aug 4th
