SPEECH & LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST – SPECIAL EDUCATION

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of an assigned administrator; plan and implement remedial programs, strategies and techniques for student s with language, speech and hearing disabilities; monitor and evaluate student progress; consult with parents, faculty, administrators and specialists concerning the language, speech and hearing needs of students.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Screen, diagnose, assess, and identify children with all types of communicative disorders in accordance with procedures outlined in Title 5 of the California Education Code.

Plan and implement programs, strategies and techniques for students with language, speech and hearing disabilities.

Design, implement and monitor Individual Educational Plans (IEP) for eligible students.

Coordinate transition plans for students moving to other settings.

Monitor and evaluate student progress; receive and respond to referrals from District personnel, parents, physicians and others; provide speech and language screenings and assessments; select, administer and interpret diagnostic tests to identify language, speech and hearing needs of students.

Consult with parents, faculty, administrators and specialists concerning language, speech and hearing needs of students; respond to inquiries and provide information concerning program activities and student progress; provide referrals to outside agencies as appropriate.

Maintain records and reports on each student enrolled to include medical reports, diagnostic information, student goals and objectives, conference notes from parents and other professionals, attendance and program activities; develop and maintain a schedule outlining program activities; prepare county and/or state reports.

Coordinate, participate and present in-services and consultations regarding language, speech and hearing disorders and special education procedures as assigned.’

Attend and participate in a variety of meetings, conferences, workshops, seminars and committees including parent-teacher conferences and Student Study Team meetings.
Operate a variety of instructional and office equipment, including a computer and assigned software.

Direct student teachers in professional preparation.

Work as a Liaison with community and state agencies concerned with students with language, speech and hearing disabilities.

Prepare a schedule and keep it current; determine personal goals and objectives.

Maintain professional standards and participate in professional growth opportunities; conduct and/or participate in in-services professional development.

Adhere to guidelines established in the Procedures Manual for Special Education Staff.

Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:

Principles, practices, theories, methods, educational trends, techniques and strategies pertaining to teaching students with speech and language impairments; techniques and procedures regarding curriculum and instructional design and delivery systems; program evaluation strategies; behavior management strategies; conflict resolution strategies and procedures; and impact of the disability on family interactions and development.

ABILITY TO:
Plan, organize, develop and conduct a comprehensive teaching and instructional program for children with speech and language impairments; provide appropriate and effective learning experiences for students from a wide range of soci-economic levels and cultural backgrounds; provide a motivating learning environment; communicate effectively in oral and written forms to a variety of audiences; establish and maintain effective working relationships with the special education team, parents, and agencies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s Degree; Masters preferred special training and/or experience preferred working with students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing. Passage of the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) if applicable to California credential.

CREDENTIAL AUTHORIZATION
Valid California credential with authorization to provide speech therapy to identified students (such as Speech Language Pathology Services or Clinical or Rehabilitative Services credentials).

Valid license issued by the SLPAB along with passage of the CBEST and a Master's degree in Communicative Disorders from an accredited college or university.

Valid California Driver's License.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Indoor classroom and office environment; driving a vehicle to conduct work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Sitting, standing or walking for extended periods of time, Manual dexterity and coordination sufficient to operate classroom equipment and to lead student s in minor skills development activities; handle and/or feel; reach with hands and arms; hearing and speaking sufficient to communicate with students, teachers, staff and parents; seeing to read a variety of materials; bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching; climb or balance; understandable voice and speech patterns; must frequently lift, push, pull, carry up to ten (10) pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds.
