Job Description

DESCRIPTION

Under the general supervision of the Superintendent/Principal, performs a variety of responsible technical and clerical duties involving circulation, reference, cataloging, and record keeping activities within a school or District library facility and to act as a prime resource person regarding materials available.

Examples of Duties

  • Catalogs books and assigns classification numbers and subject headings
  • Performs circulation functions; checks library books, materials, and equipment in and out, inspects incoming materials for damage, need for mending, etc., and provides notification and follow up on overdue materials.
  • Schedules and conducts library sessions for classes; provides basic instruction in library skills and reads stories.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports regarding circulation, collection works and materials, lost materials, media equipment, volunteer hours, etc.
  • Supervises students using the library; maintaining discipline as necessary.
  • Facilitates the use of assigned library; provides information regarding library/media materials available, reference materials, and library procedures; assists students and staff in material searches and book selections.
  • Fills teacher requests for library/media materials
  • Performs inventory of collection; reporting missing and damaged materials and recommending withdrawals/additions to the collection.
  • Promotes the use of the library through displays, bulletin boards, or other means.
  • Mends books and magazines.
  • Shelves books, and assists in the maintenance of library.
  • Serves as an information source to students, parents, teachers, and other District personnel regarding books, reading lists, new publications, etc.
  • Plans, organizes, implements, and coordinates special library programs and fund raiser such as book fairs, and reading encouragement activities.
  • Monitors, plans and controls expenditures for books and materials from a variety of funds including District, school, parent groups, and fund raisers; maintains accurate records of expenditures and receipts; tracks budgets.
  • Types a variety of materials such as orders, memos, letters, reports, correspondence, etc.
  • Attends meetings and workshops related to school library operations, procedures, and materials.
  • Trains, coordinates, and supervises the work of students and/or volunteer assistants.
  • Utilizes library database software.
  • Performs all related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Computer skills
  • Basic terminology, purpose, operations, and practices of a school library
  • Educational library/media center materials including books, video, etc.
  • Basic cataloging procedures and methods
  • Proper library circulation, reference, and retrieval methods and techniques
  • Proper English grammar, usage, vocabulary, and spelling

Ability To:

  • Communicate effectively in both oral and written forms
  • Perform specialized library technical work with speed and accuracy
  • Use standard office and library/media equipment
  • Type accurately at a rate required for successful job performance
  • Train, direct, and supervise the work of student/volunteer assistants
  • Plan and organize library activities and program effectively
  • Perform mathematical calculations using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Establish and maintain a variety of records and filing systems
  • Maintain the security and confidentiality of specified records and information
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties

Education and Experience:

  • Equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of varied clerical experience, including one year of library experience.

Conditions of Employment:

  1. Possession of a valid California State Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
  2. Department of Justice fingerprint clearance (upon job offer)
  3. Certified in First Aid and CPR
  4. TB test clearance

Work Calendar

  • 10-month position
  • Minimum of 180 work days
  • .25 FTE
