BURTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT SCHOOL NURSE JOB SUMMARY School Nurse will, under supervision of the Director of Special Education, perform a wide variety of specialized and responsible tasks including meeting the individual health needs of students; Incorporating health care plans directed by physicians; Complying with the laws relating to student health, including parental and guardian consent; Providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students; Providing health information and serving as a resource to teachers, staff, and administrators; and identifying health problems for referral for proper treatment. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 1. Credential: California credential that authorizes participation as a Nurse. 2. Education: Bachelor's degree, including all courses needed to meet all credentialing requirements. 3. Experience: Demonstrated successful job-related experience. Knowledge of: District policies and procedures as they apply; Community resources available in Porterville and Tulare County, including mental and physical health and social services agencies; Concepts of culture and sensitivity to cultural diversity; Social work and case management concepts and principles; Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; Oral and written communication skills; Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; Applicable sections of the State Education Code and other applicable laws. Ability to: Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Compile, maintain, and submit accurate and complete records and reports. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others. Work cooperatively with the business and community agencies. Verify accuracy and completeness of documents. Provide work direction to others as assigned. Speak and understand Spanish (desirable). Meet schedules and deadlines. Communicate well with others. Follow-through with directives. Collect and interpret data. Plan and organize work. Work confidentially. Work flexible hours. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION 1. Perform a wide variety of specialized tasks; interpret and apply rules and regulations as appropriate. 2. Administers first aid, medication, and specialized medical treatment for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and/or injured children. 3. Assesses situations involving students’ safety, abuse (physical, sexual, drug) and other health related issues for the purpose of identifying problems, referring for proper treatment, and complying with legal requirements. 4. Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers, and/or other agencies for the purpose of promoting needed treatment, securing information, and complying with legal requirements. 5. Conducts programs (i.e. health screening, education, etc.) for the purpose of complying with the law. 6. Develops health care plans for the purpose of addressing students’ health needs and implementing health care directions from parents and/or physicians. 7. Maintains health care plans, medical emergency cards, records (e.g. mandated screening, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by legal and professional standards. 8. Prepares documentation (e.g. student health history, current health status, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information. 9. Provides training on various health-related subjects (e.g. CPR, disaster preparedness, child abuse, health education, etc.) for the purpose of acting as a resource to students, teachers, and other school personnel on such issues. 10. Refers students requiring further medical attention for the purpose of providing needed medical treatment, counseling, etc. 11. Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining students personal safety, a positive learning environment, and adhering to Education Code, District, and/or school policy. 12. Reports students with contagious diseases to local public health authorities for the purpose of minimizing infection and complying with the law. 13. Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities. 14. Incorporated within one or more of the previously mentioned essential functions of this job description are the following essential physical requirements. 1. Seldom = Less than 25% 3.
