Job Description / Essential Elements:    Print   

BASIC FUNCTION:
Provides a comprehensive school health program for the assessment, evaluation, maintenance, and improvement of the students’ health to enhance their academic success and quality of life.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Provides primary and emergency health care, counseling, and referrals as the Charter School of San Diego’s credentialed, licensed qualified health professional: to students, staff, and parents.

Provides education on health and wellness concerns: nutrition, special health care needs of students, accessing health care, administration of specialized physical health care services, self health care, child and domestic violence and a safe school environment.

Assesses the health and developmental status of students. Provides programs that facilitate this assessment incorporating state mandates as vision and hearing screenings. Provides staff with current health status of students as may impact educational achievement.

Provides for communicable disease control, including immunization and TB skin test administration, referrals, follow-up for students and staff.

Serves as resource to school staff and students. Contributes to the formation of school health policy and the health and wellness curriculum. Conducts inservice training in first aid, bloodborne pathogens, child abuse, disaster, student health concerns and other issues.

Designs, implements and evaluates a plan to meet the individual health needs of students which may include and “Individualized Health Services Plan” (IHSP), “Individual Educational Program” (IEP) for special education program placement, 504 Plan or other accommodations for health needs.

Communicates and serves as a liaison with staff, students, parents, the medical community, community health agencies. This includes interpreting medical orders, reports and technology to ensure that students’ medical and mental health needs are met. Conducts home visits as necessary. Participates in health and wellness conferences with student, parent and staff.

Operates and maintains a variety of specialized equipment, such as otoscope, sphygmomanometer etc, to assure proper working condition of equipment.

Monitors and evaluates the school health program. Maintains student health records. Prepares and maintain a variety of State and CSSD reports as required. Participates in professional development and appraisal of professional school nurses role in conformance with school guidelines.

Attends community organization meetings, such as the Child Abuse Prevention Council and others as assigned.

Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Baccalaureate degree including all courses to meet credential requirements and continuing education requirements for license renewal.

Previous nursing experience, especially in areas of pediatric and community health.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid registered nurse license as issued by the State of California.

Valid registered nurse license as issued by the State of California Valid School Nurse Services Credential or equivalent as required by California law Valid California driver's license and the availability of a private vehicle Valid first aid and CPR certificate for health care providers Credential; Clear credential as required by California law. Nurse Practitioner Certificate: Completion of a nurse practitioner program approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing; preferably in school nursing and/or pediatrics Education; Master’s Degree Professional Experience: School nursing experience preferably in multiple socioeconomic areas Other Experience: Broad background of general knowledge and understanding of human relationships through work experience in other non-school environments.
