FRANKLIN-MCKINLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: LIBRARY/MEDIA ASSISTANT BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned Principal, perform a variety of functions involved with the circulation and distribution of books, instructional materials, and audio-visual materials and equipment; recover media and library and reference books; assist students and teachers using library/media resources. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Perform a variety of functions involved with the circulation and distribution of books, instructional materials, audio-visual materials and equipment. E Assist students and teachers using library/media resources; instruct and assist students in the use of the card catalog and on-line terminal; assist individuals and groups of students in the use of basic reference sources in finding and selecting materials. E Read age-appropriate books for primary grade students corresponding to classroom curriculum as assigned. E Receive books and media materials; catalog and process materials according to established procedures. E Recover library and reference books; prepare overdue notices and distribute bills for lost or damaged books; make calls to parents regarding overdue materials as needed. E Prepare and maintain library use schedules for class or group visits. E Perform general clerical duties, including typing, filing and maintaining records. E Monitor students in the library facilities. E Shelve materials; pull or weed collections to remove obsolete, damaged, or withdrawn books; repair damaged books; inventory library materials and media equipment. E Operate a computer and other office equipment as assigned; operate and maintain the school video network; operate various audio-visual equipment. E Assist in preparing requisitions; compile lists of requested books and materials; maintain contact with District personnel to facilitate purchases. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: Library/media center methods, practices and terminology. Dewey Decimal Classification system and technical library/media reference materials. Library and media card catalog systems and their maintenance and organization. Modern office practices, procedures and equipment. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Ability to: Perform a variety of functions involved with the circulation and distribution of books, instructional materials, and audio-visual materials and equipment. Recover media and library and reference books; assist students and teachers using library/media resources. Maintain a wide variety of records in connection with school library/media center. Maintain order among students using the library/media center. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Operate a computer terminal and other audio-visual equipment. Maintain regular attendance. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school including or supplemented by library technical assistant course work and two years of clerical experience including some experience in a library or media center. WORKING CONDITIONS: Environment: Library/Media Center environment. Constant interruptions. Physical demands: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Seeing to read a variety of materials. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. Lifting and carrying light to moderately heavy objects Pushing or pulling book carts. Climbing stepladders to shelve materials.
