ORANGE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT GROUNDS EQUIPMENT OPERATOR DEFINITION Under general supervision – regularly operates a variety of light, medium, and heavy duty motorized equipment used in ground maintenance work; maintains this equipment; may perform gardening and general grounds maintenance duties; and does related work as required. Representative Duties Regularly operates light, medium, and heavy duty motorized equipment, such as tractors, mower tractor, sweepers, skip loaders, forklifts, dump trucks, renovator, aerator, and similar equipment used in grounds work; operates powered hand tools such as small mowers, edges and hedge trimmers; services, cleans, and adjusts all equipment used, and makes minor repairs; prunes trees and shrubs; uses insecticides on plants, lawns, trees and shrubs; operates air compressors for various purposes; does planting, fertilizing, aerating and related gardening work; may occasionally be required to assist District Maintenance crews. Organizational Responsibilities Positions in this Class report to a Senior or Lead position and are responsible for the operation of motorized equipment and may be given assignments to work independently or with a crew. ENTRANCE QULIFICATIONS GUIDE Training and Experience – Equivalent to: One year of experience in general grounds, maintenance or similar work, with some responsibility for the operation of motorized equipment. Knowledge and Abilities Good knowledge of: the safe operation, use and care of medium and heavy duty power equipment, the methods, routines and materials used in caring for turf and planted areas, shrubs, and trees. Practical knowledge of: servicing and maintaining power equipment, such as used in ground maintenance. Ability to: operate medium and heavy duty power-driven equipment safely and efficiently; follow written and oral directions; operate hand, and power garden tools; work independently and in cooperation with others. Willingness to perform manual labor requiring strength, stamina and agility; and willingness to follow or vary routine as requirements of school activities demand. Licenses A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License, Class II. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS Heavy Work: Positions in this class perform work which involves the frequent lifting pushing and/or pulling of objects which may approximate 75 pounds and may occasionally weigh up to 100 pounds. Mobility: Positions in this class require the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend. Other Conditions: Incumbents are required to ride a power mower for long periods; Incumbents may be required to work in inclement weather without effective protection from sun, cold and rain: Incumbents may be required to work with harsh or toxic substances; Incumbents may be required to work around foul odors; Incumbents may be required to wear protective apparel including goggles, face protectors, aprons, shoes and oxygen breathing apparatus.
