In the San Francisco Bay Area, one KIPP elementary, seven KIPP middle schools, and three KIPP high schools are closing the achievement gap between low-income students and their more advantaged peers. These innovative, tuition-free, college-preparatory schools are located in the underserved neighborhoods of Bayview Hunters Point, the Mission and the Western Addition in San Francisco, Redwood City, East San Jose, San Lorenzo, and West Oakland.
KIPP, the Knowledge Is Power Program, is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools dedicated to preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and in life. There are currently 141 KIPP schools in 20 states and the District of Columbia serving more than 50,000 students. 85% of KIPPsters matriculate to college, and graduate at four times the rate of their peers.
KIPP Bay Area Schools operates eleven schools in the Bay Area serving over 3,000 students; with plans to grow to serve 11,000 students in the next several years.
Position Overview
Under the direction of the Education Specialist or other certificated employee, the Paraeducator will primarily assist by performing a variety of academic and behavior support duties to individual or small groups of students within the special education classroom, regular classroom and other school settings. These duties shall be designed to complement the instructional program to maximize learning opportunities for the inclusion student. The Paraeducator will also assist in the establishment and implementation of appropriate classroom and school-wide behavior and assist students to access all aspects of the educational environment of the school and the community.

As Paraeducator, you will be the primary point of support for a designated student or group of students in the daily application and implementation of academic guided practice and behavior intervention plans. You will bridge gaps that may occur in classroom lessons, in conversations, and in skill development by getting to know the student and using that knowledge and experience to everyone’s benefit. You will be expected to provide timely information to the student, to school staff, and to other team members or service providers. This information could include feedback on progress, data collected, task analysis, and concerns. As a team member working closely with a student, you will be expected to advocate appropriately to ensure the team is consistently implementing the instructional and behavior plans and to raise concerns about obstacles to successful implementation and student growth.
Daily work as Paraeducator will be directly related to the academic guided practice and behavior intervention plan(s) for the student(s) with whom you will work. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Under the direction of the Education Specialist, work with students in small groups or in one-to-one assignments to reinforce or follow up learning activities in core academic, language, and/or specialized subject areas.

Assist in the implementation of behavior intervention plans which may involve use of approved positive reinforcement strategies, behavior modification, other skills or knowledge to establish and maintain appropriate behaviors.

Facilitate and support social interactions and foster the development of positive relationships between students with disabilities and their non-disabled peers.

Assist all students by modeling appropriate behavior and attitudes and providing emotional support and general guidance.

Support students to be active participants on field trips and school assemblies or productions.

Provide Education Specialist with information on student progress through observation, daily contact, and maintenance of accurate student progress records/logs.

Assist in establishing and maintaining a clean, safe, and cooperative classroom and learning environment.

Provide testing accommodations, including supervising students completing tests in a separate location or during an extended time.

Maintain confidentiality of student records and classroom information in accordance with legal requirements and KIPP policies.

Maintain instructional program in case of temporary absence of Education Specialist.

Perform other related duties as required and assigned.
Qualifications and Desired Characteristics:
-
Completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education - defined as completion of 48 semester hours (or equivalent trimester hours) of college coursework; or
-
Obtained an associate (or higher) degree; or
-
Pass the CBEST or a local assessment of knowledge and skills in assisting in instruction.

Paid or volunteer experience working with or serving individuals with autism or behavioral deficits is preferred.

Bilingual in Vietnamese or Spanish preferred.

Excellent organizational, planning, and implementation skills.

Ability to manage the ambiguity and multiple priorities inherent in an entrepreneurial environment.

Ability to communicate and interact effectively with multiple constituencies.

Detail-oriented team player willing to roll up sleeves and get the job done.
