VACAVILLE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT SUBJECT: Counselor (7-12) CLASSIFICATION: Certificated Personnel Job Description Counselors are responsible to the person in charge of the school's counseling department and, through that person, to the school Principal. The duties and responsibilities of Counselors are: 1. To counsel students, helping them make decisions concerning educational, vocational, and personal problems. 2. To work cooperatively with parents, teachers, deans, administrators, psychologists, and nurses for the benefit of the individual student. 3. To aid pupils to find a course of study directed toward educational progress and to help the individual student to be aware of the course of study he/she must follow in order to fulfill graduation requirements. 4. To assist students in the transition to post-school training or education, including making written recommendations, helping in the application process when requested, and disseminating educational and scholarship information. 5. To act as a consultant to the deans and administrators in decisions concerning a student's progress. 6. To recommend special activities involving community resources and agencies, when deemed of value by the counselor for the individual student. 7. To confer with the administration and heads of departments concerning trends in curriculum development. 8. To assist in the orientation and registration of students in grades seven through twelve. 9. To assist in the coordination of the school testing program and to confer with students and parents concerning proficiency in the basic skills as shown by test results. 10. To provide information and interpretation to the school staff and parents pertinent to students' achievements, abilities, and educational plans. 11. To assist in maintaining appropriate school records. 12. To attend job related meetings or activities. To perform non-administrative additional duties which enhance the counseling program, when assigned by the person in charge of the counseling department and/or the Principal as adjunct to regular stated duties, provided it is mutually agreed that these activities and duties do not interfere with the counseling responsibilities outlined above. 11/3/78 doc 182:tr
