Santa Clara Unified School District Title: Principal Santa Clara, California Approved: 5/22/86 Revised: 5/86 Position Description General Functions: Assumes primary and direct responsibility for operation and administration of all functions of the school, including fiscal management, employee performance and evaluation, curriculum implementation, scheduling, student welfare, community relations, and plant and grounds maintenance. Specific Functions: 1. Assumes direct responsibility for the management of the school by observing, setting objectives consistent with the instructional objectives of the district, selecting the means to achieve the objectives, and evaluating the results. 2. Responsible for maintaining current information about the level of performance, the rate of progress, the degree and kind of motivation and the patterns of social interaction of the student who is encountering serious difficulties in his/her education. The principal obtains general information about the progress, motivation, and interaction of all other members of the student body. 3. The principal evaluates and provides the means and plans for personnel to be procured or reallocated to training programs, materials to be acquired or reallocated, strategies of grouping or regrouping in the curriculum, and changes of timing and placement, etc. Further, the principal shall be responsible for guiding students toward achieving district instructional objectives. 4. Keeps current information on the abilities, values, and plans of members of the school staff related to their job responsibilities. School staff is defined to include teachers, consultant, administrators, aides and classified personnel assigned to the school. 5. In consultation with members of the school staff, utilizing their skills, knowledge and ideas, the principal specifies the instructional program objectives to be maintained or pursued, determines changes of kind and degree in regard to these objectives, and identifies the means to be employed to achieve them. 6. For information purposes, the principal maintains accurate records of the demographic characteristics of the community served by the school. 7. Determines specifically the degree to which parents, and other community groups can suitably contribute to the attainment of the school purposes, and the need they have for information about school activities. Responsible for evaluating the interaction between the school and community and modifying the school-community relations program when desirable. 9. Establishes committees to advise the principal on the problems and opportunities, the preferences, and expectations of the faculty and students as they pertain to the needs, the structure, and function of the school. 10. Instigates changes in operational practices and procedures which are consistent with district policies and administrative regulations to ensure the continued efficient operation of the school 11. Develops and administers an annual school budget reflecting the programs offered by the school. 12. Supervises and evaluates the performance of all employees assigned to the school and recommends the appointment, termination, transfer, or promotion of employees in accordance with district policies and administrative regulations. Organizational Relationships: 1. Directly responsible to the deputy or associate superintendent depending upon the geographic site of the school. 2. Works cooperatively with all other departments and divisions. 3. Supervises, evaluates, and is responsible for the adequate performance of all employees assigned to the school. 4. Performs a liaison role with other principals in the district. 5. Works cooperatively with a variety of interested groups and acts as the representative for the school in its relationship with the immediate community.
